The Utes are hoping their national experience of the past, tough schedule, and controlled, deliberate style of play will take them once more to the Region Seven crown and another shot at the nationals. Junior forward Mo Eckroth (60) has been a consistent scorer for the Utes this season and is averaging 13.5 points per game pre-seas- The two words that best describe the University of Utah womens basketball team this season are depth and discipline. The Utes arent very flashy on the court and they dont roll down scores, opponents with but they do win. The defending league champions of the past two years have totalled an overall record of 4 since Fern Gardner became the Ute coach in 1975. In those two seasons and this, the Utes have suffered only two Intermountain league losses two years ago on the road at New Mexico State and this year in 100-pl- rr (12.1 in league) and 6.5 rebounds (6.5 league). Offensive sparkplug Lori Parrish (58, So.) is averaging 14.9 points and 9.2 rebounds, senior Linda Grant (60) and freshman Jane Quimby (510) are averaging 8.6 and 8.7 Floor points respectively. general Sheri Vest, a 52 guard with a great outside shot, is averaging 7.0 points per game this season, and guards Mona Stevens and Lyn McCarter are scoring 5.0 and 3.6 points per game, while forward Debby Lyons is scoring 4.4 points per outing. All are capable of doublefigure outputs and have proved so this season. The Utes have been a regional Gardner donned a Utah coaching shirt, but power since Fern are still learning the ropes in the national basketball world. The increasingly competitive Intermountain Region is making it difficult for any one team to dominate for long; and since Region Seven will send two representatives to sectional playoffs this year, more teams will soon be experiencing basketball on the national level. 63-1- season against Brigham Young Few coaches are respected as highly as Fern Gardner is in the Intermountain region, and she is the only coach ever to take a team to the national tournament from Region Seven (four at Utah State, and two at Utah). Gardners career record stands at 7 in the late '78 season, and her teams have played some of the mid-leagu- e 65-6- 2. 207-4- big ones from the east and west coasts.. Last year finished Utah seventh in the AIAW National Basketball Tournament after bouncing back from a hamloss to Kansas State mering 70-3- 2 to nip Michigan State 63-6- Utah impressively beat Mississippi College 83-6- and lost to Baylor in consolation. The Utes seem to be repeating their performances of the past, 77-5- 2 but there are some strong opponents waiting in the wings including Brigham Young University, Weber State College, the University of New Mexico and Utah State University in the Regional T ournament Personnel Womens Coordinator: basketball and hockey teams are known by their colors. e!!? ta us?
