Show SUN CHRONICLE, Nov. 1 8, 1 976, Page 1 3 New wrestling coach selected Royals ready varsity players Coach Ted Smith, with his assistant, Dick Wade have been working with 18 men, who comprise the varsity and JV teams of Roy High School. Seniors include Captains 6T John Garner and 6T Jim McMahon, along with 64 Mark Miller, 5T0" Rick Reeves, 510 Doug Dance, 6T Paul Ozman, and 6T" Conrad Hafen. Juniors on the squad are 65 Jeff Scholtec, 65 Steve Meenderink, 59 Kurt Bennington, 5H Craig Manning, 60 Allen Coe, 60" Mike Nichols, 61 Curtis Brown, and 60 Scott Prevedel. Three sophomores on the squad include 59 Fred Fernandes, 50 Mark Jon Nickerson, and 64 Sindle. Coach Smith will dress 12 to 14 of his men for varsity games. The juniors and sophomores on the squad may or may not play with the JV team. Roy will be a running team, and play aggressive defense. They should be strong on the boards, and have good shooting. They will employ a tight defense, and may at times go with a full court press. Two men are already on this years injury list. Junior Craig Manning tore some ligaments in football, and senior, Conrad Hafen broke his foot at basketball practice. Both should be back in action within a month. Coach Smith predicts a balanced league in Region One. Sky View will be strong. They have 64 Taylor back from last year, and they have Spuhler. Both are deadly shooters. Bonneville played a lot of sophomores and juniors last year, and they will all be bigger and better this year. They have a 65 junior named Child who started last year all-arou- man-to-ma- n David Jenson ha1- new head w lestla 7 17 - 18 - Jan. Jan. Jan. Jan. There were no other allstars in from Northern Utah. We think there are two main reasons for not getting more of our excellent football players on the rosters. selections are made by the coaches themselves. Coaches from First Weber, Ogden and Viewmont high schools didnt turn in a ballot, so some the deserving athlete from Region One or Two lost three votes. Second of coaches as a Three block. voted source us Our told that eight Region they did not vote for one outside of their own Region Three. They were selection by feathering their own region nest. Men like Budke of Roy, Balaich of Clearfield, Mathieu of Bonneville, Medina of Ben Lomond and Stone of Weber might have been named but they lost the benefit of 11 votes. BASKETBALL AND WRESTLING Basketball has moved into the teams in the process of making final and the state are limelight, throughout e of selections for their respective teams. A games in tomorrow Two One and night. begins Region But another sport also has its beginning this month. Wrestling hasnt had spectator appeal like they have in football and basketball, but it is coming. In some areas, such as Uintah and Pleasant Grove high schools, wrestling has actually drawn larger crowds than either football or basketball. Wrestling is becoming a popular sport in many sectors throughout the state. Wrestling is an art, and the strongest man doesnt always win. Skill, dedication, desire, balance and quickness are every bit as important as strength in wrestling. Discipline is the name of the game. To be more effective, the wrestler must maintain his strength, while keeping his weight at the lowest possible level. Some of those men will come out of a long football season, and then lose 15 or 20 pounds (or more) while conditioning themselves to wrestle. They must be in better shape than they were as football periods in a match can be sheer torture; players. Those three more so if they arent in top condition. Football, basketball, baseball or other team sports, a player can make an occasional goof or miss an assignment, and his teammates can absorb the mistake. Not so in wrestling. The man is all alone on that mat. One little slip can mean defeat. There is no letting up, regardless of the lead he might one pin can lose it all in the last ten seconds of the have. One mistake match. Wrestlers are classified by their weight. Starting from the 98 pounder, there are 12 men on the squad, and each man is in a separate weight bracket. On each team is one who wrestles the unlimited class. He is the only member of the team who tries to put on more weight as the season progresses. The others literally starve themselves down to their desired weight, and try to hold it. I know of no other sport so demanding. If you havent spent an evening in the stands watching a good high school wrestling match, youve missed a lot. It is fun and exciting to watch. Try it, you'11 like it. n, JV male hes begin at u m J all-stat- e. all-are- Outdoor survival all-are- .being televised all-sta- te all-sta- te 4-- A all-sta- te all-stat- er all-Sta- te . all-stat- e, full-slat- pre-seaso- n at Roy High are Jon Nickerson, Mark Sindle, and Fred Fernandes (from left).
