It was homecoming for the Skyview Bobcats, and that made winning all the more important for the Roy Royals. In a brusing battle, Roy scored late in the final quarter to edge the rugged Bobcats, Skyview drew first blood, a they mounted a drive to score in the first quarter. It was the only touchdown Roy has given up in three ball games on a sustained ground attack. The Bobcats dazzled the Royals by overloading their offensive line and running the ball to the strong side. Their offense had the effect of turning three blockers loose on Roys two middle linebackers and it worked. Slot man Blake Pickett of Skyview carried 13 times for 97 total yards in the first half, and scored a touchdown against Roys proud t?w come-from-behi- z: w mzjLj nunT$ c 13-- ir'i hr ZstSF&f 1& CROSS COUNTRY TEAM for Roy: Gordon Morris, Moulding, David Gentry and Steve Youngberg. Roy countered with their usual brand of running and passing, and on a 51 yard pass play scored with 7:44 left in the first half from McMahon to Lon Hansen, the halftime score was d Skyview had scouted the Royals, and was ready for them. They sophomore sensation Freddie Fernandes, but they failed to acknowledge that Roy has a few others who can catch the football. Fernandes missed both passes that came his way, but while two men were covering him, the other receivers had a field day. Merrill Butler caught three crucial passes to keep drives alive; Niel Cox caught one and Lon Hansen slipped behind the secondary to catch a perfect strike of 25 yards and then rambled another 25 to pay dirt. e The score at was tied but most of the statistics favored the Smithfield Bobcats. They had 10 first downs to Roys four, they had 163 yards rushing to less than 50 for Roy; they had not punted in 24 minutes of play, Roy had been forced to punt once. In a strategy session at the coaches deciphered the Skyview offensive attack and made defensive adjustments that almost completely shut off the Bobcats ground attack. Blake Pickett made only 16 yards for the rest of the game. Roy came of age in the second half. They gained over 100 yards on the ground, and continued their impressive passing attack. Jim McMahon was brilliant in leading his team to the victory. He didnt throw as many passes as usual. He mixed up his plays to keep the defense honest and then hammered them with Mike Budke up the middle. The offensive team blocked with precision and marched the team deep into Skyview territory. Several drives were stopped by untimely penalties. Finally in the fourth quarter, with second and eight, McMahon faked right and kept the ball on the old Boot Leg play around left end. Jim darted out of the grasp of the defensive end and sprinted toward the coffin corner of the end zone. They ran him out of bounds on the one yard line, one inch short of a first down. Another penalty raised its ugly head, and now it was third and goal on the five yard line. Jim faked to Budke up the middle and handed off to Jon Hansen over right tackle, and big Jon took it im.With less than lour . minutes to go, Roy had a slim six point advantage. The defensive unit led by Dave Westmoreland and his 10 tackles held Skyview at bay and preserved the win. This is the second game in which the Hansen twins scored the only touchdowns for Roy. I wonder if one hates to the other, or if they always do things in duplicate. Both of these Juniors have been pleasant surprises for Coach Jacklin with their double brand of good football. Roy should have a couple of breathers in their next two ball games. They meet Logan Friday and Bear River the following week. Coach Ernie Jacklin isnt taking either of these teams lightly. Though they are smaller schools than the other five of Region One, they too, can rise to the occasion in football. 7-- 7. m r" fcv Elmers compete By the time you read this, Roy will be well into their cross country schedule: Roy at Clearfield Sept. 9 - Skyview at Roy Sept. 13 - Roy at Ben Lomond Sept. 16 - Roy at Logan Sept. 23 - Bear River at Roy Sept. 30 - Bonneville at Roy Oct. 5 - BYE Oct. 13 - Roy at Box Elder Oct 21 - Roy at Weber, Region Meet, State Meet. He is a real Field General, and his team mates have great respect for him. His leadership ability is not questioned in Roy.
