Little and maor things can happen to cause foods in a home fieezer to thaw The question is what can and cannot be saved This problem comes up quite frequently over my Red Phone and think is a goo d idea to review some of the precautions and safety measures to be taken It could be an expensive loss if everything has to be discarded Here are steps to follow and some foods that can be saved Be sure to double check the freezer door and cord after each use, before going on a vacation and the minute you return. The Fuller the freezer is the longer the foods will keep frozen when the power is off If you find the power off for some reason, keep the freezer door closed and start the power In an emergen cy outage you can keep the food sufficiently chilled for up to two days if the freezer is full It might help to cover the freezer with newspapers and blankets (A single day for a half full freezer Here are some precautions for specific foods Any foods with ice crystals still in evidence may be refrozen immediately but for less storage time than when will be a quality change All still cold red meats fruits, uices and acid type foods may be refrozen.
