But despite the horrendous odds and downgrading by the critics, Roy football will once again find itself on the top or very near it. For the past four weeks and for the four weeks that follow, Coach Jacklin steadily works with his 1976 grouping. The players are anxious for the opener with Bountiful and they show it everyday they get together. Jacklin will be combining some reliable experience and some extraordinary young talent when the team enters its first game. Yes, there will be some returning lettermen that could possibly make up for the big loss of graduating Royals a year ago. The junior varsity survived a fair season while the sophomores were sporting one of the best groups ever. True, there will not be talent like what was demonstrated last season, but Jacklin is confident and a bit optimistic, despite it all. Who is to be the favorite in Region One? This choice for the upcoming writer sees no clean-cu- t season. Every team in the northern region will undoubtedly improve, while the Royals will be coming down to earth this season. No other team in the history of Region One, dominated the league like Roy High did last season. In 1976, a number of teams will have good hopes for the title. Host of Seniors Return Offense to be High Geared Heading up the seniors that return this season, d With the returning of Jimmy McMahon at quarterback, the Roy offense should d Mike churn smoothly. Even without a d Bobby Bell, Jimmy will McCoy, or a find ways to open up and disect opposing defenses. McMahon is easily one of the top quarterbacks in the state and with a season even half as good as the last one, he should be a highly recruited star. For now though, Coach Jacklin prefers to forget postseason tactics and you can bet hell put this point will be Mike Budke, Dave Westmoreland, Chris Shultz, Niel Cox, Merril Butler, Richard Link, Dale Parker, Lynn Weston, Kent Law, Dave Coy, Dale high-toute- fleet-foote- Bennion, Randy Jones, Jeff Talbot, Mark Miller, Kevin Colohan, Blake Manardi, Chris Jacobs, Keith Kennedy, Tony Reyna, Kelly Lawin, Mike Bennion, Dale Tellison and Brent Stoddard. Juniors capable of seeing good amounts of action include Ernie Highan, Roger Nielsen, Steve Meendrick, Greg Tulane, Mark Nelson, Mike Montgomery, Joe Frederickson, Scott Blaine, Jim Haycock, Dale Peterson, Richard Sheridan, Kurt Bennington, Lon Hanson, Jon Hanson, Clint Farmer, Mike Navidomskies. Ron Sanders, Craig Manning, John Shaw, Dale Lyman, Dean Sheppard, Robert Griffey, Mike Jones, Steve Campbell, Paul Zahn and Clair Hall. There are a few sophomores that could crack the and they include Fred Fernandes, start line-u- p Mike Mitchell, Maurice Blau, Doug Bitton, Dennis Tulane, Jon Nickerson and Corry Colohan. Coach Jacklin stated about the incoming tenth grade class, "Looks to me like were going to get some outstanding talent that could eventually compare to last seasons team. At this time, I feel that Jon Nickerson could fit in as our back-uquarterback. The others have high chances of breaking in this year. sure-hande- across. Also returning on offense is Mike Storey at center. Storey started in every game last season and should prove to be the best in Region One at that position. He worked closely with McMahon, and where k communication is vital this season, this combo could be deadly. Layne Olsen returns as a linebacker and possibly a tight end on offense. Olsen is one of the four team captains, having gained a few extra pounds and a steady desire to be a winner. The other team captain is Mark Kartchner, who Coach Jacklin stated recently of, Looking back at last years games films, a mistake we made was not playing Kartchner enough at the fullback position. He gained a lot of yards when given a chance to prove himself. And hell have all the chances he needs this season. center-quarterbac- Javier Zomora i YjY STCjS r- - p Maurice Blau 1 $ W Sk mi Js I Layne Olsen 1r4 Mark Nelson Mark Kartchner ,4 1 i i ,?
