Recreation softball for girls. mmagm r 2-- der FIRST BASEMAN Lisa dreamed up the name Bionic Batters. Another TV special created The Nerds. Thats Fonzis pet name, we said, "but what does it mean? Uncool people, said Lisa Hadley, but we are cool. Fonzie is my hero, beamed Manlyn Dance. Coach Sue Ann Bodily just smiled and shook her head Nerds, she mumbled to herself The Zooming Zaps are coached by another father, Richard Lamon. How on earth did you come up with that name? we asked his daughter, Nancy. Well, she drawled, It means fast and we can hit the ball hard enough I like my dad to coach because he doesnt lean too heavy on me. The Zooming Zaps are 8th graders from Sandndge Another group of Sandridge 8th graders call themselves The Snoopy Sluggers. They are coached by Brenda Child We were the Snoopy Slammers last year, said Sheree Stipes. We had a snoopy dog painted on our shirts and everything This year we changed to the Snoopy Sluggers because it sounds tougher and after all we are getting older, she concluded The Buzzin Bananas are coached by Mitzi Nelson They are 8th graders from both Hooper and Kanesville. V they are coached by Mrs Karen Miller. Now everbody knows that a Grand Slam is a bases loaded home run. Everybody, that is, except the Grand Slammers team We asked each of them What is a Grand Slam Twins Sandy and Cindy Kersey said "A Grand Slam is when you hit the ball way out in the field Lorraine Wakely said, Because we hit it sort of far sometimes and one of us broke the bat once Robyn Eldredge said, Mom told me but I forgot The Slick Chicks are nine year olds from North Park School They are coached by Chris Williamson Yvette Gallegos choze the name because, Well, chicks mean girls and slick means pretty sweet, but we havent won yet Then there is the Mini French Fries, who are also from North Park Their coach is Ruth Bradshaw Michelle Benmon made up the name because "Were small and French Fries are my Small and favorite thing to eat skinny is the way Wendy Schultz French Fries summed up the team taste good and we have good taste, said Linda Taylor. The Brilliant Bananas were named by teammates Kelly Colohan and Kristy Weir, said Coach Diane Herzog. Kelley liked the name because we are good and banana starts with B. Teresa Parker added her reason for the name Because were smart we won three games The V ictory V ikings represent Valley School We View Elementary borrowed our schools name, smiled But, we argued, you Amy Ashby havent won any games yet Where do you come by the name Victory I guess because we are Vikings to to win, sighed Laureen try going We hope to win, Taylor injected Desiree Carter We named the team before we ever started, she said glumly The Punky Pros are coached by Debbie Smith Punky means short and pro means great, said Christy Crezee Were not very strong, added Shamar We Smith, but were really good said Jyl Hamblin may be little, proudly, but were pros at it The Little Stinkers are proud of said Jody Frandsen, their name, because it means we are kind of mean Were trying to beat everybody and thats why we are Little Stinkers Cinda Bertrand coaches these 4th graders from Roy Elementary They are 1 in league play Our next stop was in the Big League, if you can call 7th, 8th and 9th graders Big Leaguers Their names were just as much fun The Challenging Chicks are 7th graders from Sandndge They are coached by Jim Gariepy, whose daughter Linda plays on the team Penne Martinez and Linda chose their name We asked Linda why she wanted to have her dad as the coach Because he is a hard coach and makes us hustle, she said Sometimes he gets mad at us and that makes us try har- t 8 Picking a name for a girls softball team is just as important to the gals as itself Just any old name isnt the 'S A $0 Twins Karla and Darla Parker gave Lori Higgs credit for the cute name. Banana is just something to go along with Buzzin, they said The Hooper Hillbillies used to be the Super Sluggers but some people think that Hooper people are hillbillies, laughed Donna Arnold, so we chose that name Sherry and Renae Cox coach the team. This is a 9th grade team out of Sandridge Junior High Celeste Pnce coaches a group of 6th SHAUNA SMITH - daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Smith. "The Punky Pros are not really strong, but were really good." graders known as the Slamming Sluggers. Its just a name we decided on, said Laune Fife. It means its a Jeanette Roberts good batting team added that its a team that can hit way out in the field and never strike out We lost, she moaned, because our flies get caught Last and least are the Red Sox. Last because its a boys name, we chided, and least because you are a thorn among a lot of roses said their coach, Ardene Well, Ressler, those kids took a lot of ribbing from the boys about all the dumb girl names, so they told the boys, OK, you choose a name, and thats how we got Red Sox. These gals are 8th graders from Roy Junior High. These are a few names that caught on. You should see the ones that got away. Regardless of their names, these young ladies are out to win ball games and have fun The younger girls play on 45 foot base paths and pitch from 35 feet out The 7th, 8th and 9th graders play on the regulation softball diamond They play a different brand of ball than the boys do Their play doesnt seem to be as intense and losing isnt such a big thing as it often is on a boys team. These young ladies have fun Roy Recreation can be proud of the program they provide for girls They furnish them equipment, a place to play, umpires, scorekeepers, etc., just like in the boys league It is refreshing to watch them progress in a sport that once was dominated by boys GRAND SLAMMERS at rest.
