They tops in state in future meets. will be out proving they are a hen will we ever get to see the Roy Royals 1976 track and field squad? A very good question you could say. If it isnt the weather, then its something else that is hampering Coach Jim Maw and his track crew from heading into dual meet competition. Hoy is a good favorite to win the bicentennial Region One track title and keep up their fine tradition in track. The team this season is well balanced and most talented in many years. Each event sports a top standout who is well known around the Region. The Royals finished just behind the Bonneville Lakers in Region One last season, and are out to change that trend this season. If the Roy team cant go outside to practice, particularly last Monday, then they spend long hours before and after school working in the gym and even the halls of the school. Coach Maw has assured almost everyone, that he and his team are out to make a name for themselves in 1976, but the Roy mentor is cautious the majority of times, careful what he says and careful what he does. Last Tuesday, Roys high hurdle favorite, Bruce Lyman, was demonstrating almost perfect form in gliding over the two hurdles that Coach Maw had set up. Even Coach Maw himself, got into the act occasionally in showing that he hadnt lost much of track ability. The team, especially Coach Maw, were relieved sprinter Mike McCoy back into action. Recently McCoy had been out of the lineup while recovering from an operation on his nose. Hes at the moment. He along with feeling Carl Bastian, will be making the headlines in the sprinting events this spring. Both were excellent on the grid iron that season, both playing in running back positions. Many teams in Region One are gifted with pretty exceptional speed, but Roy might just have a little more gusto this season. And if they dont have it, they will surely make up for it in the weight events. Here is where Mike Fosmark, Kevin Thompson and a host of others standout as they did on the football field last season. Once the weather does clear, expect to see some mighty fiesty periormances from these heavyweights. Coach John Flint of the Clearfield Falcons was quoted recently as saying, If the Roy Royals dont take state or come mighty close, to it, I will be disappointed. Clearfield may have a team that is still one or two years away lrom being a top contender in state, but the Falcons should be a solid threat in Region Two alter their licking of Weber High last Tuesday. Coach Flint went further to sav, The Royals have it in nearly every position. Good depth and a great attitude of what I hear. to have -- 107-3- 4 Roy tradition strong By Lynn Arave in Roy High School has always had a solid winning tradition track and field In fact, over-al- l the Royals have probably performed better in track and field than in anv other sport (even foot- ball1). - To illustrate this, consider the following: Roy High has won six out of a possible ten region one track and field championships. This includes four straight titles from 1970 to 1973. Although Roy High has never won a state championship in any sport during its eleven year history; its best colle tion of s is round in track. Nearly nine years ago at the state track meet, Roy finished in second place to produce what is still its best showing in state competition to date. In addition, Roy took fourth and third places respectively at the 1971 and 1973 state track meets. e The following is a listing of Roy Highs performance Record in Track and Field: near-misse- all-tim- 1966-ls- t, 1967-ls- t, 1973-ls- t, 1968-5t- 1967-2n- 1969-7t- 1971-4t- 1970-ls- 1971-ls- t, t, State track meet l975-2n- 1974-3r- 1972-llt- 1973-8t- 1972-ls- t, place--1966-4t- 1974-3r- 1975-12t- n a LLLL 389 Sq.
