Ihe Royals gave Orem a Irom spec-lacul- run for their money as the Golden Tigers eventually finished fourth in the state tournament. The Wednesday aiternoon game saw a sizzling Ben Lomond High team take an 8 point victorv over the Royals. In that second game, the Scots shot well over 60 percent in the game. The Green brothers combined tor 36 points while Jack Dike and Dave Jennings combined for 15 and 17 points apiece. Page 13 Its 3lrS combined to get. Last season's team posted an mark. Rick Stonehocker was the Royals tip scorer with more than 14 points per game. Doug Porter led his team in rebounding and was a solid scoring threat towards the end of the season. Both were recently named to the One team. a saddening experience for four-yea- r head coach, Ted Smith, who happens to be the only coach to take a Roy team to state. Hes guided three teams to state in the last four years. The inability to capture a state tournament victory is disheartening, but w ith the addition of the key tall figures in next years line-uRoy could very well be winning their first Region One title and not only winning their first state game but several others. Players earn awards IT LL BE WAIT TILL next year for the majority of this cage team. The Royals again entered the tournament and were defeated in two games. Rick Stonehocker and Doug Porter, their names well established around the Region One circles in basketball small talks, were recently named to the One basketball squad. Other players being named to the squad were, Dale Thompson, Bear River; Mark Weese, Bear River; Brad Cutler, Bear River; Rulon Jones, Weber; Frank Shaw, Weber; Todd by Lynn Arave Weber State begins its 1976 outdoor track season this Saturday at 12:30 p.m. by hosting an eleven team field for the ninth annual WSC Invitational Track and Field Meet. Teams invited to compete in the meet are: Utah State, Colorado State, Johnson, Skyview; Brad Thomas, Skyview; Scott Corry, Box Elder; and Bonneville. Brian Castlemain, Receiving honorable mention for the Royals were Dan Smith,. Greg, iphols and junior Jim McMahon. Stonehocker led the Royals in scoring with a fast start in the beginning weeks of the season. He served as the Royals captain in 1976 and was the key to the Roy fast break time and time again. Porter was instrumental in Roys success in the second half of the schedule. He had a fast start, fizzled somewhat, and ended up very strong. In the last six games he was averaging over 16 points per game. Montana State, Ricks, Southern Utah, Eastern Utah, College of Idaho, Southern Idaho and Northwest Nazarene. The Wildcat. .Tracksters are very, youthful and inexperienced with only two seniors and three juniors on the team. They will be hard pressed to perform well against Colorado State - a strong Western Athletic Conference foe and always tough - arch rival Utah State University. Colorado State has a track team that took fifth in the WAC Indoor track meet one month ago, finishing only five points behind third placer BYU. The Rams have an excellent crew of distance runners that placed 8th in the NCAA Cross Country meet last fall. Greg Duhaime is one of the best individuals on the team since he won the WAC Indoor mile race last month with a time of 4:09.9. CSU also has a seven foot high jumper and a crack mile relay team thats clocked a sizzling 3:14.9 time indoors this year. Utah State is a team that finished ten points ahead of Weber two months ago in an indoor meet at Pocatello. The Aggies have a strong steeplechase runner in Carl Galbraith - a former Davis High athlete and a swift sprinter Emmanuel Idemudia. USU also has some good quarter and half-mil- e runners that were fast enough to qualify for the NCAA Indoor track meet held last month. The Weber State team, although young boasts 13 returning lettermen, two school record holders and seven individuals who have placed in the Big Sky Conference Track meet. The Wildcats will rely heavily on the talents of four former Roy High athletes - Doug Friedli, Lynn Bennington, Mike Vaughn and Randy Shepherd; as well as on three High stars - Kevin Coombs, Keith Knowles and Bill Tervort - to score some crucial points. Snow, Dixie, , Easter Seal tourney ends Five Roy eighth grade teams competed in the 1976 Easter Seals basketball tournament over the past week with four of the teams placing in the top eight. Coach Harold Millers squad led the wav for Roy, going all the way to the championship game. Mostly Sand Ridge Junior High eighth graders. Coach Millers team went down 8 to a fine team lrom Ogden. The championship school was combining at least four junior highs in the Ogden area to make up their learn. Finishing third in the tournament was Floyd Wiedmeirs team which was a majority of Sand Ridge players. Long standing Harry Hall took his team to a fourth place ranking in the tournament. South Ogden captured fifth, Willard Craguns bunch from Roy snared sixth place. Kaysville was seventh and Layton was eighth. Harry Hall, who helped to form the tournament, described it as another successful happening among young Americans. A total of 12 total teams were involved and with everything involved, olficials report making over $600. This money will go towards crippled childrens funds. The Easter Seals tournament is sponsored by the Utah National Guard and Layton City. It was reported making $900 last season, but because of the state basketball tournament, the attendance was down. 49-2- well-balanc- -- Lakers hope for region title During the past week at Bonneville High, Kelly Shepherd was selected as captain of the Laker team. Fortunes for Bonneville baseball look bright this spring, with Coach Steve Gardner leading the to way. Several returning lettermen are back run up the base paths, to spit cannonballs across the plate and to drive opposing outfielders wry with a spray of long shots. Shepherd is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Farrell Shepherd of 598 Leona Drive in South Ogden. The remaining members of the team follow. Dave Hock is the assistant coach. Shepherd is the teams Brent starting catcher, while Dan Rich and the be will backups. Castlemain 1976 pitchers include Scott Singleton, Gary Tracy, Brett Van Leuuen. Infielders for the Lakers will be Rick Walton, Kevin Hurley, Jeff Blackburn, Craig Halmerson, Garth Hutgley, Kelly Taylor, Brad Moore, Kelly Kennedy, Kim Wilde, and Dale Jones. Coach Gardners outfielders will be Kurt Boyer, Bart Hodges, Brian Castlemain, Steve Hamberlin, Kirt Nelson, Jeff Stonebrook, Gaylen Deardon, and Joey Hill. champion Arizona Wildcats on the NCAA Seven basketball team announced Monday. The district includes Arizona, . Sophomore Doug Friedli will be Webers top entry in the mile and 880 running events. He has personal bests of 4:12.5 and 1:54.2 respectively for those events and finished sixth in the Big Sky Conference Mile run last spring. He still holds all the Roy High School distance running records. Friedli will be backed up by two former Laker Athletes - freshmen Keith Knowles and Bill Tervort. Knowles, is the holder of Bonnevilles Mile record and has run 4:37 for the mile indoors thus far, while Tervort has been trying to get back into top form following a winter leg injury, but could see action in the steeplechase and three mile run along with teammate Lynn Strong. Lynn Bennington will be competing in the dash events for Weber. He has clocked a 5.5 indoor 50 yard dash this year and has a personal best of 9.7 for the 100 yard dash. Hell be aided by teammates Kelly McGarry and Tom Nielson. Bennington holds Roy Highs sprint records, while McGarry was a former Ogden high athlete and Nielson an High star. Freshman Randy Shepherd set the Roy High School record in the 440 yard dash last spring by circling the oval in 49.7 seconds. Hes run 51.5 this year and could push teammate Gary Figgins who has also run 49.7. Mike Vaughn was the state pole vault champion at Roy High, although he ended up barely missing the Roy High redord for the vault. He has cleared 14.6 already this season indoors and will back up teammate Larry Rose, the Weber State school record holder in the pole vault at 16 feet. a Kevin Coombs, returned missionary, won the Big Sky long jump as a freshman and could be one to watch. He leaped 2 as a senior at Bonneville High to set the school 23-6'- record. Other Weber State entries in Saturdays meet will be: weight events - Bob Davis and Darrell Trump; high and Leon jump - Bill Shaw Hurdles - Clyde Barker Eddy and Mark Von Iderstein; 880 - Ron (6-9'- Russell (1:59); springs- - Gary Rothman and Randy Neilson; triple jump - Brad Ay lor; pole vault - Tim Lewis. New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho and Montana. The WAC and Big Sky Conference are part of the district. Arizona State center Scott Lloyd led the balloting for the team with 98 points. Fleming had 93 and Elliott 82. Joining them on the first team were Gary Brewster of Texas-E- l Paso and Jeff Judkins of Utah. Lloyd, Elliott and Brewster are centers, while Fleming is a forward and Judkins a guard. The teams are not selected by position. The second team included Ed Gregg of Utah State, Jay Chees-ma- n of Brigham Young, Charles Menatti of Utah, Ricky Williams of New Mexico, Jim W7atts of Weber State and Steve Hayes of Idaho. The third team included Jeff Jonas, Utah; Tom DeBerry, Northern Arizona; Jake Poole, UTEP;' Larry Gray and George Berry, New Mexico and A1 Dewitt, Weber State. IT'S CAMPING TIME!
