Show V Page S Tluirsdav Sun Chronicle , o ember 27, 1975 I t SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS - a b Keith Duncan Royals and the Bountihil Bi aves hae something m common a newly lound hitler ptep n airy between each ot hoi The two schools li.ne stayed moie meamnglul contests tins season, that hae taught the attention ol even Royal spoits freak But last Fiiday night it was the Ron als tutu to add to the win column Sensational senioi. Ritk Stonehoi ker poured tlnough an amazing 33 points to lead the Koval i tigers to their lust season The ictoi v of the young 1975-7clash m, irked the openei lor lioth teams, who just got tlnough shedding then football goal tor a pair of trunks, a sleeveless eise. and a pair of sneakers The Kovals had just over a week and a halt to preptue for the voidest while the Braves had only a shoit week to practice But for an opener. 144 points between the clubs was scored, which isn't all that had Roy defeated the Biaves 75 to tit leading nearly the whole game The game was played before a packed auditorium crowd that cheered each bucket on the way to victory Earlier, the junior varsity had defeated the Hi aves (7 (13 m a hardwood thriller The Rov als held a slim 20 17 ad v antage at the fn st quarter In eak Dan Smith was Mr Even thing m the The Ho 6 All opening ienod as he sank 10 poults but gamed i fouls with his aggressive delensive play But the consistent Rick Stonehocker kept the Royals m tact the whole game Stoney piled in his .11 points, snatched down 9 rebounds, had tom assists, and shot a remaikable pei ventage from the field and the floor ssi.stant coach, Fred Thompson said attei the game that if Rick had shot mm e he could have had 50 joints, They'd probably never get the right kind of revenge for the grid loss m the semifinals but an occasional cage victory doesn't harm anything oone and Moss of Bountilul began to hit uncanny jumpshots from the outside as the fourth quarter opened They battled back to wathin five points and tlneatened to do more harm, but Stonehocker seemed to pump in a jump shot just when his team needed it or grabbed a crucial rebound at desperate moments, Marcus Watts louled out ol the game and the bountiful lebounding stiength weakened. Although the Bountiful team outscored the Royals m the linal stanza, Coach Smiths ti oops held onto win Other scorers for the Royals inv lulled John Garner with 3, Dan Smith with 17 Jell Daily 4, Brad Fisher, 4, Gieg Niv hols 4, Doug Porter 9, Conrad Hafen with Pat Hanley, Jim Mi Mahon and Maik Miller did not scoie Reports were that McMahon had spumed Ins ankle during the junior vatsity game, but the extent of the injury was not too serious After game comments trom Coach Ted Smith came as follows, "The game was a good one foi us to win Bountilul's ,i good team and they 'll be tliei e as soon as they get in the groove Our guards Stonehocker and Nichols) did the oh easily The Braves who had 3 of their star-ten- s foul out ot the contest, were hampeied by the whistle constantly Toone who was the high man for the Biaves with 19 points, but was plagued with foul problems also The Royals who have gone to brands ot basketball, compared to years in past, widened their hnlttune lead, to 37 29 The Braves have a new coach and they too run a wide open game instead of the set offense they were accustomed to with Raw lee Pei kins and Larry Miller last season The Royals were steady the entire game and led by as much as 12 points at times The Braves heated up their attack in the second half but were still on the short end of the score as the third jjcnod horn blew Roy was in front ot the grudge match and the Royal Ians were loving every minute of it 75-C- 9 1 55-4- 6 i State picks in 1 lebounding, something that you wouldnt normally see at this school in the )ast y ears It w as a ditferent kind of ball game lor us since we had to run and shoot In the past y ear weve been able to slow the tempo of the game and run a more jjattern type olfense with the presence of the big man Realistically speaking I'd have to say that we played a good delensive game, even though they scored 69 points and threw in a lot ol slop underneath we Offensively laded at the fiee throw line because we know vveiebettei than that Our outside 'hooting was better than I supposed, but Nr hols is a better shooter than 4 joints worth, he's probably the best pen metei shooter on the team Coach Smith summed up things when he said, "I was generally pleased with the pertoi mance but we've still got a lot of things to woik on was really saw at with the beginwhat pleased ning ot the final quarter when the team began to jell and woi k together But for the delensive game we played, we should have won by a great margin 1 1 Last Satuiday the team traveled to Spnngville to engage in their second encounter Two years ago the team was beaten badly and last year Roy only pulled out a squeaker counterpart against Spnngville, a pre-seaso- n 975 by Keith Duncan Winning is wonderful, it isn't everything, but its sure wonderful And towin, it takes a total effort and it requires the athlete to hurt a bit Besides the athlete what does the total effort have meaning for or whom does it include? Of course, it takes the whole team pushing and striving for each other, but I think the meaning we are looking for is the community, the students, administration, the boosters club, local papers and other affiliated personnel that work so many long unnoticed hours for the win Take for example the past football season m which the Roy High Royals enjoyed probably their most successful grid season in the history of the school They couldnt have done it s without the superb talent, excellent coaching and that to win But then again, you can't escape the fact that the above organizations had something to do with the 10 victories spread over the season To be a Royal football player and take a drive down Roys main street and see all the businesses that were behind you, is generally uplifting They proved it by encouraging the Royals on with nitty slogans bannered across the various advertising marquees It was not only noticed by the Roy students and p'ayers but visitors to Roy who took the idea back to then home towns. Roy is a close knit community more so than most people think and the football team just seemed to help bring things together And the business will probably continue their support right through the basketball, wrestling, and swimming seasons Another important link in that total effort is the administration, students--, and cheerleaders in the school itself I ve seen many schools with outstanding teams over the past yeais, but the Royals this season weie exceptional in leading .ed that team support Coach Tom Budge of Bonnev die once the support of the Royal fans, the community, and tne booser club was adding about 30 percent to their victories He also jointed out that Roy, Hooper and Kanesvtlle weie sort of inseparable and that aided them in pulling closer together Rnncipal Dr Darrell K White of Roy , an exceptional sports fan, is surely to be figured into the picture. After a player was injui ed on the field or something extraordinary had happened, hed be the first out of the stands to lend assistance and see what the nature of the injury was or to congratulate a play er on a fine play You don't see that kind ot cooperation by too many school leaders around the state. In his office the walls are decorated with Roy pennants and the desk is cluttered with all sorts of trophies that his school has collected over the past seasons. I conversed with Principal White one day in his office and this is what he had to say about the past grid season and the upcoming cage schedule, Its evident now that our football team had an internal pride that was very obvious to us that were in close contactwith the team, but to others it didnt quite lellect as much I personally could depend on the team members to be good citizens, knowing that they were not out smoking, drinking or carrying on somewhere We had fantastic involvement from the students and the community Homecoming this year was by far the best that this school has ever had. We bioke all the attendance records this season and for the entire season we were fabulous I would have to honestly say that the community support in this city of Roy, is the best in the state You just cant beat it Any successful season involves the tremendous support of the students and Mr White kind of summed this year has been no exception up what he had said in concluding with, "Winning is a success when everyone is involved " The 1975-7version of the Roy Boosters Club will be another great page in the history ot the school and for the club itself They're so successful in fact that many of the schools around the northern It.ih area are coming to them for advice to start other Ijooster clubs But the Roy boosters just keep on improving raising more funds and thinking up new ideas The Roy Boosters meet every first and third Wednesday of every month at Roy High Their meeting will be on Dec 3 and in that session, Ted Smith, head baskethall coach, w ill show a film on reffing and answer most questions on the new cage season. Presently the club is selling club memberships for $5 and Royal athletic activity passes for just $10 These passes will let the holder into any activity this winter which includes basketball, wrestling, swimming and girls sports games The 1975-7piosidont of the boosters club is George Nit hols He claims the primary objective of the club is to bcxjst the kids not the winning, although winning makes things easier Mr Nicholas says that the Roy High student lx.dy officers have asked the Boosters club to help put on an assembly in the near future. The Club gladly accepted Other club heads include Russell Sholtec as vice piesident, Shirley Jacobs as secretary-treasurer- ; Evelyn McCoy as the piogram chairman for booster club nights, Maria Fiancis heads up the program making for game activities, Terry Mifflin serves as the advertising manager for game programs He will also help construct the Alumni Basketball Game to be played later in the season, and f'aun Lyman, who is the telephone committee chairman Enough cannot be said about the Royals Boosters Club and Ive only skipped around at a few things that they have and are still trying to accomplish I'm impressed with their work and so is everyone else that had anything to do with them. All these organizations are helping to make athletics en jov able at Roy High. While continually decline m their image toward the fan, we tan generally sit down and enjoy watching the preps perform today. Ami it wouldnt he possible if it were not for the total involved effort as demon strated by athletics at Roy High , . 6 MIKE McCOY All-Sta- te MIKE FOSMAKK All-Sta- te 6 Wildcats make public debut 'I he Weber Slate Wildcat basketball team will make its public debut tins Saturday, Nov 29, in a game against San Jose State A highlight of the game will he the ha'll, me where youngsters will be invited out ot the stands to participate in free throw shooting contests Competition will be in thice divisions under 10, between 10 and 12 years, and from 12 to 14 years of age.
