He compiled a 293-9record in 14 seasons for a fine percentage of .752 which placed him third behind Kentucky's Adolph Rupp and UCLA's John Wooden among coaches of that period. It included nine consecutive seasons, nine straight tournaments and two National Invitation Tournament championships. From Providence, Joe went to the Los Angeles Lakers of the NBA. In his first try at coaching in the pro ranks in 1969-7he guided the Lakers to a regular-seasorecord and to playoff victories over the Phoenix Suns and Atlanta Hawks. His club advanced all the way to the seventh game of the championship series before losing to the Cinderella New York post-seaso- n 46-3- 6 Knicks. In 1970-7- n the Lakers under Mullaney won the NBA Pacific Division title with a record, knocked off the Chicago Bulls in the first round of the playoffs, but lost to the eventual NBA champion Milwaukee Bucks in the Western Conference finals. Mullaney accomplished this success with the Lakers in spite of the fact the clubs big three of Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry W'est and Elgin Baylor played together in only 13 games over two seasons. Joe moved to the ABA in 1971-7and posted the aforementioned mark with a team considered still in the formative stages. The Colonels last year didnt do as well in regular-seasoplay, finishing a game behind the Carolina Cougars in the eastern division standirgs with a record, but in the playoffs defeated both the Virginia Squires and Carolina before extending the Indiana Pacers to seven games in the championship finals Now its on to Utah with the Stars and ivlullanev is looking forward with eager anticipation to guiding the club back into ABA the throneroom. There are many sides to Joe Mullaney. He is, in one in1 48-3- 4 2 68-1- 6 n 56-2- 8 stance, a straight-shootin- g strategist who approaches the game of basketball with realistic appraisals and uncommon candor. He pulls no punches. Off the court, he becomes a warm, outgoing raconteur who spices his basketball embellishments with humor. On the other hand, when the ball goes up for the opening tip at a game, he becomes a study if enthusiasm and nervous energy. He is completely enveloped by the goings-owithin the periphery of those painted lines known as a basketball court. He leaps in the air, paces the sidelines, shouts instructions in crucial situations and buries his head in his hands on the bench when frustration takes over. All of these things, when meshed together, form the embodiment of a great basketball coach. n |
