Show Sun Chronicle 1 Levfer the edotor If Dear FLtor: apparent, from the hunof Letters to the Editor appearing in our newspapers throughout that grass-root- the Americans are greatly upset, angry, and disturbed by the current senate "Watergate investigation. And we gather that what has people upset the most, is not so much the idea of the investigation itself, but what is seen as a blatant, on glaring double-standarthe part of the investigators. One letter (selected at random) from an irate reader, expresses views which we see repeated over and again: What of the other side of the coin? When anti-wa- r ted, among other things, his brief stay in jail (he is out, as of this writing, on bail). He faces possible imprisonment of up to sixty years. In jail, he met a fellow prisoner who had been convicted for murder and sentenced to prison for -fifteen years. If the American people share any one feeling in common, it is that all should be given fair and equal ,'eat-men- t. It is painfully app. rent that those who are accused of d demonstrators broke into having draft board offices aijcl public buildings, poured blood on files, burned and destroyed property at Berkeley, Columbia, Kent, Santa Barbara, cut any connection (however remote) with the bugging and breakin of June 17, 1972, are not being given the same treatment as those who have committed much more vicious, hateful, and violent crimes against this country. That is why, in our opinion, people are angry: and that is why we further believe that, as the hearings drag on, public reaction is going to swing more and more against the members of the committee who are displaying such zealous diligence in going after the wi messes appearing before t"'em. Cordially, fire hoses and assaulted firemen and policemen (all criminal acts); when William Sloan Coffin, Ramsey Clark, Jane Fonda, the Berrigan Brothers et al journeyed to Hanoi (all illegal, acts); did the politicians call for senate investigations into the crime, and also indictments for arson, inciting to riot, property destruction, assault, etc? Did they dig into whence came the funds to fly, support, and provide legal counsel for those ii rn 825-947- 4 x did not.
