ROY - No less than 10 Royals will be competing in Saturday's Utah State high school track championships on the University of Utah campus Rice Stadium. Last week the Royals ran at Weber State College in Ogden and came away with the region championship as they totaled 1352 team points to Box Elder and Sky View. The Bees and Bobcats tied for second with 954 points while Weber finished next with 602. Logan and Bear netted 48 while Bonneville finished last with 45 points. Doug Nelson was the big man for Roy as he took a double win in the field events. A vault of 13 feet gave him first in the pole vault and 6'2 gave him first in the high Roy managed a sweep S'mp. the pole vault as Paul Christiansen took second and junior Mike Vaughn grabbed third. All three advance to the state meet. Veteran Doug Friedli also was a double winner as he wept the 880 yard run and the mile. A solid 2:01.1 let him hit the tape first in the 880 and a 4 : 30.3 gave him a mile victory. Dennis McCoy nearly pulled off another double for Roy in taking the high hurdles in 15.2 and finishing a close second in the low hurdles. Richard Tubbs goes to state with a 10.3 clocking and first place the 100 yard dash. He pulled a muscle in his shoulder blade, but ran a brave fourth in the 220 in his quest for a double victory. Frank Fernandes nabbed third place in the shot put to to advance state in another field event. Steve Dick Simon, race car driver from Salt Lake City, hit Smith sent the discus 154lV to take that event while Danny Thomas also made it to state by grabbing third with a toss of 1419a. Head coach Jim Maw called the region win by his Royals expeteted by still outstanding, and is looking forward to the finals in Salt Lake City this Saturday morning and afternoon marking the end of an outstanding year in track for RHS. His baseball career started in Ogden some 21 years ago, and on May 21 Frank Robinson will return to Utah.
