It was the first season ever recorded in Weber County junior high basketball. Brent Close and Mike McCoy lead the Roy scoring w ith an average of 16 pts. per game t . h. CHS and Layton met each other Tuesday night in the Davis High gym in a playoff game to see who received the honor of facing Skyline in a contest to see who enters the state basketball tournament. The Roy Stars are entering the County finals for the third straight year having won in 1971 and losing in a close battle in the semifinal game in 1972. Big Verns Braves have made an annual visit to the County Championships and f.nished second there in 1972. The Royals are making their first visit to County Championship play. The Eight Balls won the County Championship in 1972 and then lost some members to the 1973 County Junior High Champions, Roy Junior High. The caliber of play in the County Championship games are very close and exciting. Parents and interested friends are encouraged to attend with no charge made for admission to the games. Royals wrap up fie game - ROY The Ted Smith coached Roy Royals have wrapped up at least a tie for a state tournament berth. The Royals had a chance to gain an outright slot when they hosted the Box Elder Bees, but the results werent available at press time. If Roy lost to the Bees they face a playoff game with Weber this weekend, but if they defeated the Bees, they will enter the state tournament as region ones third place team with a 6 . season mark. In other region one games this week it will be Bear River ) visiting undefeated Sky View and Bonnevilles ) Lakers ) hosting the state-boun- d Logan Grizzlies As of right now only Sky View and Logan are certain of entering the state meet. The two other teams to enter the meet will be chosen from Roy, Box Elder, and Weber. Roy and Box Elder have 6 region marks while Weber has ended its region play with a record. Recent stats show that the Royals Danny Thomas is now seventh in region one scoring with nearly a 13.0 average. Nielsen of Bear River leads the region in scoring with a 23.2 mark. Despite the Royals region mark, they are currently in third place in the region and are the favorites to enter the state tournament over Box Elder and Weber although two will n.ake it along with Sky View and Logan. (2-9- (11-0- (2-9- (9-2- 5-- 6 5-- 5-- 7 n but when tournament time comes around anything can happen and usually does. All that the region two schools know for sure is that Bountiful, Viewmont, and Ogden will be in the 1973 state tournament for sure. Both Layton and CHS, bitter rr. als, tied with region records making a playoff essential. CHS got into the playoff situation bv a victory over winless Ben Lomond in Ogden last Wednesday night. At first things looked like the Scots were on to their first win in 10 starts as they jumped out to an early first period lead. CHS was freezing cold from the floor as Bennie Tillman pushed the Scots on 5-- 5 are expected to represent their schools in Junior High play next year. The tournament is an annua! affair sponsored by Layton City and is open to boys in the 8th grade and under. Five of the eight teams played in the Morgan Lions Tournament last week w'here several close games were played. Layton will be out to defend a title won last year; Big Vern's Braves from Roy with players from Roy Junior High: "Arbys Bucks" with players from Sandridge Jr. High in Roy, North Davis Jr. High in Clearfield, two seventh grade Roy Jr. High players and two Roy Elementary players; South Ogden with South Jr. High players; Sunset Jr. High; Kaysville Jr. High; Hill AFB: and Guadalupe from Salt Lake City complete the field. Layton will be favored to win but can expect stiff challenges from most of the other teams including South Ogden who they barely edged in the semifinal game in Morgan. Games will be played on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. March 8. 9 and 10. Players in the tournament will range from4T0to64. No less than ten Falcons registered in (he scoring column. Final stats for the region two action this year shows that Mark Handy, Ogden's center was the leading scorer with 232 total points fora 23 2 average, sixth in the state.
