Under the picture are the words Sunday Devotional. It is an apt and timely illustration. These folks in the picture, like the Pilgrim fathers, going to church with a Bible in one hand and a musket in the other, contribute their physical presence in a Sunday devotional service as a witness of the faith by which they live. Sunday morning to them is not the time to catch up on sleep, wash out a few things, polish the car or work in the garden. It is not a time to go fishing, hunting skiing or to play golf. It is the time to go to church. So they go to church. An ominous sign of the spiritual decadence of our civilization is that Sunday is considered as either another holiday or another shopping day. It is so occupied with secular interests that for millions of Americans attendance at church is not given the slightest consideration on the schedules of this holy day. goers will tell you that they need rest and relaxation from the stress and strain of the weeks labors; that they have to have Non-chur- ' steep, sunshine and exercise; that it is just as worshipful to go into the hills and out onto ffift rtrkes toYevel in Gods great as to go to church. The man or woman who says that is merely rationalizing for his neglect of public worship, or in other words, for his refusal to obey one of the most important of the commandments. These excuses can be made to sound most convincing, but behind imphatic phrasings, the recalcitrant knows deep down in his heart that he is robbing himself of something that is vital to his eternal happiness. He observes those of his friends and associates who go to church and notes that the atmosphere of a congregation of united worshippers, all striving toward the same goal, imparts to those who participate something he does not get. Certainly attendance at church does something to the neglected spirit in man, at least once a week. The Bible says Man shall not live by bread alone, meaning that the spirit has to be fed just as much as the body and the mind. When you do not feed an emotion, an expression, a conviction or a faith, itgrows dim and dies. Mormons believe the best reason why everybody should go to church is that the Lord has commanded them to do so. In a revelation to the Prophet Joseph Smith given in Jack-so- n County, Mo., in 1831 the Lord said: And that thou mayest more fully keep thyself unspotted from the world, thou shalt go to the house of prayer and offer up they sacraments upon my holy day; For verily this is a day appointed unto you to rest from your labors, and to pay thy devotions unto the Most High; nevertheless thy vows shall be offered up in righteousness on all days and at all times; But remember that on this, the Lords day, thou shalt offer thine obligations and thy sacraments unto thy brethren and before the Lord. (Doctrine and Covenants 59:9-12- ) Faith in the soiritual verities, symbolized by the Church, marks the great difference between our way of life and the godless regimes But this faith has to of the police states. be supported by worship which presupposes a knowledge of the truth about God's laws and persuades the worshipper to keep the standards of personal righteousness they to get your refrigerator to cook things.
