Pack e The Administration's freeze dramatically illustrated the need for a reform of the nation's labor relations law, which is an inflationary force because of the preponderance of power it gives to labor unions. Whether almost commonplace twenty and thirty percent wage settlement packages have been the symptom or the cause of a sick economy can be debated, but it cannot be denied that they happened. Business seemed helpless to do anything but accept the big wages and raise prices. Meanwhile, foreign countries, without strict pollution controls and relatively lower living standards for their workers, were taking over the American markets in product after product. Hopefully, free economic competition conducted with a rulebook that is fair to all will come soon. Meanwhile, Congress should initiate legislation to provide a more equitable balance in the collective bargaining process.
