Show News SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS 11 WEDNESDAY APRIL 28, 2004 Young bow hunters plead guilty to not putting fire out Seven young men from Nephi, three ofwhom are juveniles, pled guilty before US Magistrate Judge Robert T. Braithwaite on March 22 to building a fire in a prohibited area. The pleas resulted from an incident in August. The young men met near Bowers Knoll, south of Hatch, to hunt for deer. It rained hard one day. In an attempt to get warm they built two small fires under some trees. At the time, southern Utah was under a fire restriction that prohibited campfires outside of developed campgrounds. After a short while, the hunters went back to their camp. The investigation revealed they had left the fires after kicking some dirt on them while it was still raining, believing the fires would go out on their own. After the fires smoldered for four days, they began to spread. An alert citizen saw the smoke and called the Forest Service. Initial attack forces were able to extinguish the fires while they were still small. Judge Braithwaite ordered each young man to pay his share of the cost of suppressing the fire, which totaled $1021.79. Upon hearing of the cooperation from these young men in the investigation, Braithwaite reduced the fines normally imposed for leaving a campfire. Fire Management Officer Pete Goetzinger of the Cedar City Ranger District of the Dixie National Forest says many people just dont realize how important it is to be sure their fire is completely out before leaving it, even if its raining. One sure way to know if your fire is out is to put your bare hand into the coals. If its still hot, its not out and more water and dirt needs to be stirred in to ensure its out. Cedar City Ranger District Fire Prevention Technician Matt Buhler reminds people that a fire can smolder for weeks ber fore bursting into flame, long after the people who started it are gone. He suggests that forest visitors check with a Forest Service officer or visitor center to learn about any fire restrictions in the area.
