Show SOUTHKKN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 11, 2004 Opinion 4 Dixie Speaks Where were you? Our elected officials have the best interests of the city and countv at heart, (according to them). They care about things thev perceive important; roads, grazing and the need to stand stronglv against the federal government! They 've even gone 'outside the box' to discredit anvone who believes, speaks or questions anv differently. But our elected officials care... with taxpayers money! d Thev write letters, attend meetings and spend tax dollars to defend what they believe in. (Including, but not limited to, hiring one of the highest paid lawyers in the state to defend actions mam thought illegal.) haven't written much about it, even though I felt I should. I reasoned that since I'm not from here, maybe I didn't understand what's important to people. I have a different opinion on most city and count) issues heralded recently, and an even different take on them using tax dollars to defend their actions! But apart from all of that, I was surprised and saddened that none of our elected officials were at the Democratic-sponsore- d forum on renewed nuclear testing and downwinders last Friday night. While I realize that there are occasional scheduling conflicts, their absence left a huge impression with most in attendance. This issue bespeaks something much bigger than partiNEVER PASS UP A GOOD OPPORTUNITY... san politics. It's not a Republican or Democrat issue, but one of what's right and wrong. Are people in the west... actually, all over the country... expendable in the name of testing and national security? People of all parties surely care about constituents getting sick, losing property and dying from the What is your opinion? How sad local government only considers certain issues for display on their mantel! Nuclear testing isn't just about several folks' livelihood, but one that has killed many in the past, and if implemented, is likely to have a significant impact on future generations. Why weren't you at the hearing? If you could not be in attendance, why not send one commissioner or a small city delegation, or even make a resolution condemning further nuclear testing in Nevada! This is not a partisan issue, but one that has caused the death of many of your past constituents and one that will undoubtably kill more in the future. I'm sorry to tell you this issue is a wee bit bigger than a road right or guys-thi- s someone's ranching permit! Show us you care about issues that impact the whole county and not just a select few! We call upon the Kane County Commission and the Kanab City Council to send a letter to the President, our U.S. Senators strongly-worde- d and Congressmen from Utah, letting them know that any further nuclear testing is unacceptable.
