Show School SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY APRIL 23, 2003 13 Valley High students to attend Girls State Long Valley American Legion Auxiliary 120 is pleased to announce the names of the Valley High School girls who were chosen to attend Girls State in June 'TV at Southern Utah University in r'jv Cedar City. They are Brandy Brinkerhoff, daughter of Leon and Sally Brinkerhoff of Glendale, and Brittany Richins, daughter of Phillip and Elise Richins of Orderville. Through a unique citizenship & & training program, Auxiliary, members teach the youth of our nation to understand, comprehend and appreciate their roles as United States citizens. For over 50 years, the American Legion Auxiliary has succeeded in giving young women the finest citizenship training program Fredonia Boys State 2003 Justin Johnson (r) was selected as a delegate for Boys State representing Fredonia High School. Recently, the staff of The Daily Utah Chronicle , the University of Utahs student newspaper, garnered 24 Mark of Excellence awards in the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Region 9 competition. The Chronicle received individual honors in the news, sports, column writing, student magazine and photography categories. Chronicle editor Jeremy Harmon, News Editor Sheena McFarland and Assistant Photo Editor Lonny Danler accepted the awards at the annual SPJ Region 9 Conference, held at Southern Utah University in Cedar City. The competition takes place among student newspapers from Colorado, New Mexico, West Texas, e Wyoming and Utah, and winners advance to the national competition. College journalism is a com- petitive proposition in our state and in our region, and the U students performance in this prestigious competition speaks well of the University of Utah journalism program and of The Daily Utah Chronicle . comHarmon, a munication major and is proud of his staff of 60. This year we had a core group with experience, but the majority ofthe staff were new so we saw this as a rebuildingyear. But, if we can win this number of awards, think what we can do with an even more experienced staff, he notes, adding that one of the real strengths of The Chronicle is the great diversity that exists among its editors and reporters. Diversity in the news room is very important. We are one of the most diverse groups of students on campus. Family Council, (Kane County Association of Parents for all kids Success), will hold a special family council meeting on Tuesday, April 29, at 7 p.m. at Kanab High School in Room 104. Behavior Specialist Marian Hunt ik returning to Kanab that evening to answer parents questions about behavior. Marian presented a three day workshop a couple of years ago and was the keynote speaker at the New Frontiers for Families conference three years ago. She has consulted with families on an individual basis, as well. Her practical approach to behavior and parenting has endeared her to parents through out the state who have heard her speak. She is near the end ofthe grant she has had to share her knowledge and has offered to come back to Kanab and answer your questions on behavior.
