So, we may see that for us Easter i$yiot a promise of good As things to come later, but the reality of good things now. of the was raised from the Father, Christ dead, by te glory we too might walk ( right now ) in newie,of life. How many religious novels and pictures fail to understand Christianity at just this, Its most critical point. You recall, The hero, The Robe. for example, the closing scene of Marcelus, defies the Roman Emperor, Caligula, and is condemned to die In the arena. He Is joined b his faithful and wife, Diana. She decided to go with him saying to the As for me, I have another King, and I desire to go Emperor, with' my husband Into that Kingdom Together they march confidently to their end, knowing that the will shortly enter into an eternal Kingdom of love. So, hand in hand, they move with measured tread, pale but smiling, looking forward to the Lords welcome on the other side. But, inspiring as this scene may have been for many of the millions who saw It, it is but a modern version of the ancient myths that thought of religion as courage to face dying, and salvation frbm this world, with all Its cares and troubles, its fears and longings, from sin and death Into a better and an eternal world. But Christianity Is essentially a this worldly religion. The Resurrection has not to do with release from this world, but with a new life within this world. Christ does not save us from history, but within history. He saves us now. It is not a case of his waiting on the other side to welcome us into Another Kingdom. His Kingdom Is here and now. He did not rise from the grave In order to disappear Into another world, but In order freely and victoriously firbe with his disciples In this world. Let us bring this right home to our own situation. The Easter affirmation, Christ is risen from the dead does not mean that I am guaranteed lmmortallity. If it were just a matter of sur- vlval, I am not at all sure that Id want It for eternity. As I now am I couldnt stand myself for thousands, extending Into millions of years, and Lcouldntstantmostof the other persons I know, for all eternity. Just continuance would be hell. But when Christ Is risen from the dead it means that right now, In this place where I stand, there is power over death and all Its works. And what is death? Death Is not just the distant end of life, but Its dally reality. It Is not only that we shall die one day. Death Is much greater and more dangerous than that. It is the great 'No', the shadow that hangs over our human life and accompanies It with frustration and defeat. Death threatens every moment with meaninglessness, and steals Joy and power from every great deed. Death Is the ever present and bitter fruit of evil This Is what I must contend with each day, tjje discouragement, and the disillusionment, and the despair tha?'"' try to engulf me But against these works of death there stands as a bulwark the risen and living Christ. It is He who, day by day, upholds and defends me, and grants me life that Is abun. dant. But do we know that Christ Is risen from the dead to give us power in the place where we are? Or, are our lives lived under the shadow of death? Some months ago two Japanese soldiers were found In the Philippines who didnt know that the war had ended fourteen years previously. For all this time they had been living in the wilderness, practically as wild me, suspicious of every stranger, firing upon any Intruder. Incredible as It sounds they did not know, until they were finally captured, that the war had ended years earlier, and that they had been carrying on their fighting in the midst of peace. Is It not yet more Incredible that Christ has risen from the dead, to proclaim the new age of Gods Kingdom, to establish righteousness and peace , to banish death and all Its works, and yet we have not heard we have not believed that it Is really That we dont need to be afraid of our neighbor any true? more. That we do not need to fight him any more. That we do not need to live In the bondage of sin any more. Christ Is risen, and has conquered death, and all Its works. We need but believe, and accept his victory for our own. We In Lenten Bible study meetings a woman remarked: read about the crucifixion and we know it was a horrible event, but It happened a long time ago, and its all over now. But then we hear that this all took place for us. And I get thinking, " Wouldnt my life be very different If I really believed that Jesus died for me, personally? " And, we might add, If I further believed that Gods rising Him from- - the dead was for me? Wouldnt this utterly transform our lives. If we rfcsily believed that all this, the whole grand drama of creation and redemption, was for you and for me? Then at this place where we now are, there might be limitless power. In Galilee, today, we might live. Christ Is risen from the dead. And because he lives, we too shall live. In him nothing can have dominion over us, neither death, nor sorrow, nor want, nor pain, but only the love of God. His risen body gives flesh to our hopes and his living spirit puts eternity In our hearts. In Flder Alfred B. Smith will represent the Church's General Welfare Committee and Elder Jerry D.
