Show L&lMlALS . . . On Buying Buses not easy, to spent 35 million dollars a 'year, as tlie administrators and board of the Granite District I now, only too well, A major asset on the books of the district is the fleet of buses hih carry a lion 25 per rent of the students to the classrooms. Ruses and thejr pun hasing make up a major headache for. the board as well. In few areas is there as much opportunity for pressure and confusion. I There will he cries that the low bid should determine the purrhasing of buses until an axle or brake fails. The proposal that prire quotations he ronsidered hv the hoard makes sene. It faux ides the administrators and hoard in obtaining true value from with some degree of the standpoint ui (1) low initial tost; (2) greatest possible safety; (3) adequate conduit, (4) lung hie and low main tenance cost. The scrutiny of the board is of considerable value in this matter, but it must yield in part to the essential factor of experience that lies with the administration and its staff. The magazine Nations Schools conducted a survey of on the purchasing of school 1019 school districts in buses and issued the following statementSpecifications for school buses are largely the responsibility of the administrator and Ins administrative slalf, those olficials being mentioned by 70 per cent of the respondents. Board members were mentioned by less than 14 perertn of the respondents, and 60 per cent of those mentioned were in districts of less than 600 enrollment No lesponding distiict in the 12.000 plus calegoiy mentioned the boarc member as being involved in preparing specifications. 11 - The administration should make every effoit to substitute "actual physical dimensions and characteristics for trade names wliei e possible but it must be recognized that in some cases technical factors make such substitution impractical. The principle of considering price quotations is sound provided it gives the taxpayer true value for his dollar. , Let's Take a Look - This newspaper will undertake a thorough study of property, schools, and the Granit? District in serial form in the near future. As a start we invite our readers to send us letters. Let us know your ideas, your experiences, your complaints, and your plaudi'ts. By the way, please sign them if youd like them published, well withhold your name if you desire. PTA Strikes Back i Like the backyard barbecue, the little league and small foreign Car, the PTA has become the symbol of cehtury suburbia. In much of 'the literature of the cfily (probably written by people who complain about bad schools) the PTA comes out second best. The threat of having to go to a tTA meeting will cause many a husband to suddenly decide that the basement room which has needed a paint job for three weeks must be done that night. The PTA has become fair game for television comics and assistant professors of . mid-twentie- pseudo-sophisticat- th ed sociology. This month marks PTA FoundersDay and its time to strike back. The key to good education lies party with good facilities, well thought out curricula, capable teachers adequately paid, and skillful administration. Yet the tough, delicate task of educating a child is only half possible if these factors are present without (1) the inspiration an interested, receptive parent can impart to a teacher and (2) the confidence and respect an' inspired teacher provides for the conscientious parent. At its best the Parent-TeacheAssociation provides the basis for this kind of relationship and that applies in many cases in this community. As Founders Day is upon you, members of the rs PTA, speak up you represent, actually, or potentially, the finest in the development of the education process. Despite the noise of the critics and satirists, the quiet vital work must contonue with you (fathers included). & will Grant Affleck Earns Top Salesman Award - Mr Grant Affleck of the Fred A.
