Carol Jarvis Phd. wrote In a recent Issue of "Nursing Life magazine. Few people want to count to ten anymore when theyre angry. In fact, say we shouldnt. However, they tend What's your reaction or suffer In - I can see. Is such an aggressive response to anger even cathartic? Jack Hokanson a veritable Sherlock Holmes of psychological sleuthing has been tracking catharsis theories for 20 years, using clues from one experiment to pose questions for the next. In the early 1960s for example, one Hokanson experiment showed that aggression was cathartic: The blood pressure of angry students would return to normal faster when they could retaliate against the person whod angered them than when they couldnt retaliate. But then Hokanson noticed that this was true only when the person who angered them was a fellow student; when he was a In those davs. teachers teacher, retaliation wasnt cathartic. You didnt snap were still regarded as legitimate authorities. back at them In a cavalier way. Expressing anger to a manager, then and now, is itself an arousing, anxiety-produciaction, no matter how justified you think you are. Far from reducing anger, It complicates it. Aggression, then, might be cathartic only against your peers and subordinates; It doesnt work when the target Is your boss, another authority, or an Innocent bystander. Furthermore, you can learn to produce a cathartic effect. Say youre upset. Someone Irritates you or goads you and finally provokes you over the edge Now you do something. You lash out or of hit, or practice Rachmaninoff on the piano. In so doing, the unpleasant arousal and the sensation of anger diminishes, and you feel better. You no longer want to lash out or hit, and you switch to a peaceful Chopin prelude. All of these reactions to anger may be cathartic; that is, they may lessen your psysiologlc arousal and Its corresponding sensation At the same time, you are acquiring that your blood Is boiling. This habit doesnt mean you will be less angry a cathartic habit. In the future. It means that when you are angry, youre likely to do what worked for you before: swearing noisily, having a drink, listening to music, punching the person who crossed you. Both personality and personal experience also enter Into the picture. Some people tend to feel guilty about expressing hostility; they have a strong need for approval from others, so theyre likely to respond to stress by denying It rather than by meeting it head-o- n For these people, aggression Isnt cathartic. Some people, by virtue of their temperment and history, are less aggressive than others, and their cathartic patterns reflect this. Garn moves against IMF to stop eoppor glut Sen. Jake Garn, R -- Utah, Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, has Introduced aSenate Resolution to abolish the International Monetary Funds (IMF) Compensatory Financing Facility (CFF) In an effort to end the overproduction of copper. CFF Is a fund designed to protect IMF members from temporary dips in world commodity prices. Garn explained his attack of the Compensatory Financing Facility fund. "Third world nations like Zambia, Zaire, Peru and Chile are doing everything they can to expand the proauction of their copper mines, despite the current world glut of copper and depressed prices. When copper prices are down the IMF nations qualify for CFF funding to compensate for their losses from over production. But, the overproduction stems from their own action. The more copper these nations mine, the more they are eligible for relief from IMF. Meanwhile, American taxpayers are lending money to the IMF to support cower production, while our copper miners are losing their Jobs because of the depressed copper prices. "Obviously, the CrF fund, designed to provide temporary relief from depressed prices. Is out of control. Its being used to support a ridiculous economic policy which encourages failure for everyone Involved. The result has been more and more copper production at a time when It cant be sold at a reasonable price. The Senate Banking Committee has oversight jurisdiction for UJS. participation In the IMF, and Sen. Garn has promised to use his position as chairman to correct "Inconthat are sistencies and abuses ruining the copper Industry. This resolution is the first step with further action to follow. UPAL won the award for Its research and development of the turbine generator that Is expected to be on line at Roosevelt Hot Springs by 6. Unlike Its predecessors, which use only steam, the plant will be able to draw energy from both steam and superheated water at the Beaver County site. This is expected to boost efficiency by as much as 48 percent over earlier designs. Overall, the cost of geothermal energy with the new equipment should be about 11 percent cheaper than for future coal -- fired generation. For the 35 year life of each 14 megawatt plant plant, this means a projected savings of around $5 million In 1984 dollars. If the geothermal resource can be developed to by adding more plants, those savings could escalate to $90 million or cy mid-198- more.
