Please help by calling if you suspect any suspicious activity. During the past year, several poaching cases have resulted in high fines and stiff penalties. This Is beginning to make an impact on Utahs poaching problem. Last year an Emery County man was arrested for the unlawful possession of an elk. The alleged poacher was tried in the 11th Circuit Court in Price and found guilty. He was assessed a $1,000 fine, $750 restitution (replacement cost of the animal), 30 days in jail and revocation of his big game hunting privileges for five (5) years. The penalties are the maximum that can be assessed and Judge Ruggeri deserves sportsmans appreciation for getting tough with the poachers of this state. Another case occurred this fall when two Henderson, Nevada, men were arrested and jailed the week after the archery hunt. The men were accused of taking a buck and doe deer with a firearm during ar chery season. Judge Tervort of Manti found the Nevada men guilty and assessed substantial penalties: $1,000 fine each with $500 suspended, $500 restitution each, confiscation of a .243 caliber rifle and two compound bows, six months probation each and revocation of hunting privileges in Utah for up to five years. Judge Tervort has been assessing stiff penalties to convicted poachers in his jurisdiction for several years and has done much to curb poaching. Paul Woodbury, chief of law en -forcement for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, says that tougher laws, combined with strict penalties, are the most effective preventative methods for cutting down on the poaching problems in Utah. The "Help Stop Poaching" notline has been beneficial in apprehending and prosecuting Utahs wildlife poachers. A good example of this oc ver.
