Show COllc Thursday, January An nd of era? Many who know Lillian Cook will think so. And certainly the Milford Municipal Airport will go under a few changes, tnder new management, Lillian re tired Saturday, December 31st. But Mayor Pettey and the Mil ford City Council hopes the changes will not affect the continuous growth and Improvement the airport has had during the last eleven and a half years under Lillians management. Lillian generated so much good will during those eleven and a half years that many pilots made it a point to make Milford a rest and fuel stop as they traveled over Mil- ford. She provided more than fuel and oil for their aircraft. A courtesy car was available to run to town for food and lodging. And the homey office provided a comfortable place to relax for a few minutes out of the cockpit, with a pop and candy bar. And of course Lillian would provide friendly conversation as she did her ironing, watered her flowers or any of the many other tasks she conducted as her dally routine. Lillian not only was on the job eight hours a day, six days a week, (she hired help on her sabbath) but she was readily available to travelers needing fuel in the wee hours of the night. She became Milfords ambassador. Often she was the only person from Milford travelers ever met. Their effection for her hospitality Is evidenced by the many letters and cards she has received. She has a whole wall plastered with business cards from those passing through. Some would buzz her on the radio when they were passing over, even when there wasnt time to stop. Lillian says, "Weve worked all we hope to do some But anyone who knows traveling. Cliff and Lillian knows they wont become idle. They are industrous and hard working, and that won't our lives, change. Booe-vlll- THE LITTLE ONES ARE BEST: Lillian filled gas tanks on all sizes of planes during her years at the Milford Airport, but she liked the little ones best. Lillian took over the airport In June of 1972, at a time when the City Council was debatlngon whether to keep it open. Ben and Judy Briscoe were the first leasees at the airport and ran it for several years, devoting much time to getting it established. Carl Lowe took the lease, and when he quit Lillian took over. The airport office soon took on a new under Lillians deflavor dication. Flowers sprouted from everywhere. Pictures, handiwork, and her special touch made the airport clflce more than just four walls. She made friends easily, and it rubbed off on all who came in contact with her. It was good business it was good for Ml! ford. And each year the airport grew. The volume of gas pumped continued to increase. Traffic was up, and the airport continued to be Improved. The past summer saw the landing strip resurfaced, new lights and beacon, and it has become a first class facility. And much of tho credit belongs to Lillian Mayer Cook. over Wendy Pectol has taken the management. Though the Job of airport manager is apfolntivv. now, many of the incentives of the former lease agreement are still there. And though we are sure Wendy will do a fine job, there are many who are going to miss Lillians gentle touch and friendly manner.
