Show Madame "Doctor Zhivago X CENTRE UPTOWN you cried at Stella Dallas you'll sob your heart out in Madame X. In Madame X you The acting, in general, is not one of the reasons why Zhivago is a fine movie. The best performances are given by those in supporting roles, If get catharsis like mother used to make poor Lana Turner is abused and abused until youre sure that no further indignity could be conceived that they could heap on her. Thats where youre wrong, those good old fashioned abuses never stop. Madame X.) You may like it. The Sound of Music UTAH (4 stars) The movie is a little over-lon- g but it's a touching good story and the music is a joy. The cinematography is excellent, the aerial photography fantastic. The story, based on actual events in the lives of Baron von Trapp, his children and his wife Maria, is delightful and quite . . . exciting The Sound of Music is a family in the true sense of the word, a movie well worth seeing. After 350,000 (at last report) Salt Lakers is testament enough. far and away the best by Rod Steiger. Omar Sharif spends much of his time peering out windows and focusing his intense eyes. He makes for a somewhat wooden Zhivago, a fact that becomes especially clear when you are supposed to imagine he is in the throes of creating beautiful poetry Julie Christie looks great (sometimes she gets a little parched by the cold but then that's part of the story), and Geraldine Chaplin as well. But Rod Steiger made the movie every time he came on the screen, which was too seldom. Tom Courteny and Alec Guiness also did well in minor parts. Guiness especially was smooth as silk and in one scene managed to look as young as he did in Great Expectations. The movie was excellently photographed, almost to the point of overphotography. Lean took the whole cast to Finland so he could get the proper frozen steppes effect. He got it all right. Doctor Zhivago has star movie. It just misses being great, perhaps because it is too big. Lean can make the excellent big movie but maybe he should try a little one again. It is an excellent movie, definitely a . f that "Halleluja Trail kirk PARK-V- Halleluja Trail is one of the better Cinerama movies, certainly one of the best of the Cinerama movies with a plot. Burt Lancaster and Lee Remick both give good per- formances and the film is not a slave to the Cinerama process. For this reason Halleluja Trail should transfer well will to the Rialto where it be shown on a regular screen. It's a good movie and if you didnt bother to see it at the Villa you should see it now "Bambi and The Incredible Mr. Limpet WOODLAND Bambi is Bambi and not much more need be said than that. It isn't one of Disneys greatest cartoon mo- vies, Snow White and Alice in Wonderland, for example, are far superior. But no child is going to dislike Bambi. there's plenty going on and the parents can even sit back and enjoy it. The kids may or may not like The Incred ible Mr. Limpet Parent's did.
