The young people at the meeting were articulate and intelligent. Tne officials were experienced and cautious.. We wish the new council well. At this third meeting no solid programs emerged acceptable to both sides. A workable activity for young people this summer will require imagination on both sides - as well as tolerance. Any solution from the adult world that says "sure we want the teenagers to have fun aslongas they dont do those terrible dances," becomes part of the problem, not a contribution to the solution. A Political Conssmnt Also any teen solution that says We want to have fun in our own way without any adults around to keep tab on us," doesnt provide a realistic solution. Some compromise - plus imagination is needed from both NO, MY DEAR, ITS NOT THAT KIND OF PARTY sides. As a taking start in this direction may we suggest the following, up on Commissioner Creers idea to use the schools: Hold summer dances at the schools, if the consent of the school boards is available. Rather than burdening the taxpayer with the extra cost of policing your activities, the teen groups sponsoring the dances might consider hiring ty policemen to help keep order. The small cost of could be spread throughout the group. The policemen this could arrive in their own private cars -- thus removing some of the stigma. They would still have all the authority of their office, but being there at your request, rather than by the necessity of slowing you down, they help keep out the so called "undesirable element and prevent the need for drastic action. Perhaps off duty teachers could be hired to supplement the police and help keep die school boards off-du- happy. It would cost a little very little really when spread out among the group..... but then we're certain the young people dont expect it to be free in total. Pub licAmbulance J V Salt Lake City Commission again is asked to consider elimination of free ambulance service as superfluous to the specialized police function. The police department resists the proposal cm the flimsy premise that ambulance service is vital to police public relations. Dr. Lawrence E. Patients could be transported by private ambulance ..to the appropriate hospital, rather than to the nearest hospital. Under the police economy system, most patients must be moved a second time at greater suffering and , expense. J While Salt Lake Valley is contemplating construction of a new facility to accommodate theatrical productions, we learned last week, some attention needs be given to whatever is required to make people take a greater interest to theatrical productions. I was one of something less than 175 persons (including some relatives and some classmates of the cast) who sat to the first ten rows (not a stogie row filled of the ten) and watched Dixie CoUege Theatre present a superb performance of Arthur Millers Death Of A Salesman. Apart from the physiological impossiof young coUege men assuming the voice characteristics of old age, the Dixie College cast was professional. And when the lights went up after final curtain, several ladies dabbed toe tears from their cheeks. bility After a slow start, Darla KaiEnomoto Linda Loman gave a convincing performance. The voice drawback was toe only negative criticism we had of John Wilkinson as Willy Loman, and even that fault was buried at times under excellent as performance. We were not alone to wondering how a Dixie College could provide a cast so uniformly suitable to the challenge of each significant role. This Isnt a review, or wed go on and define the impressions created by.each of the young stars. This, father, is a criticism. It is a criticism of a community unwilling to support serious endeavor to bring toe living theatre into Salt Lake Valley. We waited until toe series....The Utah College Theater Festival....was over to comment to ascertain that our reception of the cast from Dixie College was of the same meagre quantity shown toe other schools participating. Good performances much bigger deserve audiences. ' . I have never seen such goings on in all my life. No, it wasnt the wrestlers that disturbed me...it was the women in the audience. Gosh! I know now how a thing like feeding Christians to lions could happen in a civilization. The popularity of the event was sus- tained by overwhelming demand by the women in the audience. The scene could only be described as mass hysteria with vicarious sensual overtones playing a vital role in the blood curdling spectacle. As far as I was concerned the action to watch at a wrestling match is the women in attendance. I must have lost at least five pounds worrying about the prospect of the women turning on me for the grand finale of gore. For those of you skeptics who dont believe me...see it.. .live.
