Adapted from the Edward Albee Broadway play by Ernest Lehman and directed by Mike Nichols. Definitely an aauit film - rated unobjectionable for adults with reservations by Legion of Decency. The movie is expertly directed, cast and played. Albee s dial ouge has come through Hollywood unscathed to provide a film with impact - and one that evokes rather traumatic audience reaction and sympathy with the plight of two people with problems not quite so remote. Modesty Blaise iH Monica Vitti, Terence Stamp, Dirk Bogarde, Harry Andrews -spy story - Legion of decency rating - Unobjectionable for adults. Monica Vitti is only one of the attributes that help to make Modesty Blaise exotic. It's a wild spy film - that spoofs not oily spy films, but everything else around. The whole film is redeemed by the fact that Monica turns out to have a little evil in her as well. The Russians Are Coming The Russians Are Coming With Carl Reiner, Eva Marie Saint, Alan Arkin, Brain Keith, Johnathan Winters, Theodore Bikel - comedy - family entertainment. A Russian sub goofs and goes aground on a sand bar off New England. The Russian crew goes ashore to get help from townspeople - who aren't quite sure if they've been invaded or not. - The result is hilarious. A - A Thousand York is excellent Clowns may inspire you to quit your job the day after you see it. Khartoum With Chirlton Heston, Laur- ence Olivier, Richard Johnson, Ralph Richardson - a fine adventure film - good for family entertainment. When a British General and his 10,000 untrained Egyptian troops go after religious fanatic Laurence Olivier in the Sudan, they are led into a trap a massacred. From then on it's seige and confrontation between British General Gordon (Charlton Heston) and Olivier as the Mahdi. The production is good - photography excellent - and the action spectacular - a good adventure film. Thousand Clowns A With Jason Robards, Barbara Harris, Martin Balsam, Barry Gordon, Gene Saks, WiUiam Dan- iels. Suitable for adults and young adults. A recent movie in town was called "Bom Free" about a lioness who wouldn't be tamed. A Thousand Clowns" is the 'Born Free of the human world - its theme is the revolt against the captive absurdity of the routine world. Jason Robard is the rebel, Martin Balsam who wen an Oscar as Robard s brother, gives in to the world - but gracefully. The appealing attraction of the movie is Barry Gordon, who plays Robard s 12 year old nephew - caught between the worlds conformity and Robard's independence - with charm. The dialouge is sharp and stimulating - the photography, particularly the outdoor shots of New Fine Madness With Sean Connery, Joanne Woodward, JeanSeberg, Patrick O'Neal. This is not family entertainment, Legion of Decency B Rating. If you've been wondering whether Sean Connery and James Bond would be matched for life - forget it. Connery proves his talent to be varied and professional in A Fine Madness." The story levels a find comic blast at most of the accepted institutions, and Connery, as a roughhewn poet Connery shows as much disregard for the ac- cepted norm as he shows high regard for the pleasures of sex. Joanne Woodward and Jean turn in satisfactory roles. The film suffers from a heavy hand in the direction of burlesque - when it could have been sharp Se-be- rg satire. G 14 |
