They all know they want somethin but they dont know what it is except to dance, said Steve Horton, assistant manager, Utah Civic Ballet; himself a former dancer. So dancers dance to a rigorous schedule that keeps them on their toes from early morning to late at night. And when their legs ache and their toes hurt, the music starts and they are again on their toes. The Spring Gala totaled 73,000 hours of work, including costumes and scenery. It is this continuous work that will create five enchanting performances of "Coppelia for ballet goers. Coppelia by Delibes will be performed July 26 to 30, 8 P.M. at Pioneer Memorial Theatre, A lyrical and dramatic ballet, it tells the romantic story of Swanhilda and Franz. A toy maker makes a doll so life-li- ke that the villagers think she is the most beautiful girl they have ever seen, and Franz makes advances td wed her. His lover, Swanhilda becomes jealous until she discovers that the beauty is only a doU. i Swanhilda takes the place of the doH and tricks the toy maker into thinking his marie has made thedoU live. Franz and Swanhilda point out the mans foolishness and are married in romantic dance. Alternating the leading roles of Swanhilda and Franz are Annie Burton and Tomm Ruud and Barbara Hamblin and Gary Horton. Annie is a carbonated little pixie, a magic little doll herself. Hailing from Atlanta, she joined the New York Ballet Company on a scholarship when she was a junior in high school. She danced in the Soviet Union on the companys recent tour. She said that the Russians are very dramatic in their ballet and made extensive use erf costuming and scenery. New York choregographer, George Balanchine presented his concept of expression in movement with little costuming and scenery. f "The Russians were a good audience, and I think they were interested in our dancing, but I think they liked the costumes better revealed, said Annie. But for Ballanchine, the dancers were his creation, she was not an individual, and Annie has too much carbonation for that.... Shes a petite little doll, not the dancer that Ballanchine prefers. My legs arent long, , said Annie, I just didn't fit, She went back to Atlanta to go to college, but found that dance was stiU too much of her life. She came to the University of Utah, at that time the mily school in the United States where a dancer could get a degree in ballet and receive general education classes. Here I can do dramatic parts," said Annie, And that's what I like to do. Annie will marry in August, but will continue dancing and plans to go to Atlanta to participate in her hometown's summer ballet. How does a dancer combine marriage with dancing?
