Show REVIEW. June 9. 1966 Modern Technology Can Develop Or Destroy S. L. Regionalism The biggest problem in architecture, according to Burtch W. Beall, is under standing the role of the architect....what he does and what the client can expect from him. This is what Mr. Beall tries to teach in a humanity class oi architecture appreciation" at the University of Utah. The class is for the layman who may someday be exposed to architecture through such roles as banker, realtor or school board member. We have to educate the client to realize architecture is broader than the individual building," he said. He labeled this organic Each part is architecture. a part of a whole, but not more important than the whole. The architect is interested in the broad community, in the neighborhood and in the individual building. There can be a regional character and we should try to develop it, he stated. The architect enumerated the steps toward regionalism. The architect first asks what is peculiar to the state. Then, what makes Salt Lake different from Ogden or Provo? What makes Sugar House different from downtown Salt Lake? What is peculiar to the neighborhood? Finally, he at the Individual looks building. Maybe the client doesn't accept this regional concept. Mr. Beall then states, it is time for the architect to get off his pedestal and make it a good building anyway. "Regardless, we want good architecture. Architects must also consider that building needs have changed. Historically there was no air conditioning or heating so buildings were built compatible with the area and indigenous architecture developed, Mr. Beall reports. As people became more sophisticated, buildings also grew more sophisticated. Glass made a great deal of difference and then beating. We now have tinted glass, heating, air conditioning. . . Mr. Beall believes that we have something unique here and modern technology can develop or tear down this uniqueness. "It takes the understanding of the owner and the architect, he said. Regionalism means similarity to many people, he noted. "This is not what were talking about. f Mr. Beall pointed out that homes in the East bench are ignoring regionalism. Home-owne- rs build large west windows and then pull their drapes. They have to have the tremendous view, yet they ignore Utahs regional glaring light. We have materials here: for bricks, stone, clay climatic conditions, terrain-th- e mountain backdrop. 'We have many influences and its putting them together that creates regionalism. In addition to regionalsim, however, Mr. Beall believes an Individual buildings function should be expressed. He is designing the Fine Arts Building for Utah State University and feels that this building should not look like a mining or engineering building. Buildings shouldn t all look alike, but one building cant be so different that it stands out like a sore thumb," he H - ofUtahStateUniversltysFlneArts Building shows the three performing areas surrounded by student classrooms and work areas.
