Professors Wish Fulfilled Thirty JYears Later University of Utah Profes- sor Dr. Paul Nicholes fulfilled a dream 30 years late. Ever since he was a kid. Dr. Nicholes has wanted to fly. But flying is expensive and until 1957, he didnt have $300 to plunk down for flying lessons. Dr. Nicholes, a microbiology instructor at the Univer-si- ty of Utah Medical School, said that in 1957 he received some extra money by teaching an extension class out at I decided to use it Dugway. for flying lessons." he said. At that time, the University of Utah had a flying club which the Air Force ROTC started. "I joined it the next year,' Dr. Nicholes said. "One day two of the clubs officers came into my office and dumped the books into my lap. One was ping to be commissioned soon in the Air Force, the other was transferring to Utah State. They told me that I was it, he said. When Dr . N icholes took over there were 18 the club, members on the books. "I thought we were going bankrupt," he said. The flying professor quickly let it be known that there were going to be a few chanps made around there. He increased the dues from tour to six dollars a month. Also, club members were getting there flying gasoline free. I made them buy it," he said. "What really got us out of the doldrums was when one of our members cracked up one of our planes. The insurance covered the loss and it enabled us to buy another one on better terms," Dr. Nicholes said. He noted that the accident didnt kill the guy. "It broke his back, but he was all right in a couple of weeks. It scared out of the guy with the him who was taking nis first airplane ride," Dr. Nicholas quipped. He pointed out that the accident enabled the club to buy another plane from a guy having tax difficulties. "We got it for a good price." Explaining some of the finer points of flying, the biologist noted that learning how to handle a plane isn't much of a problem. "The problem is getting it off and mi the ground." Comparing flying to driving: With flying, one has another demension. Almost anyone who can plan a cross country trip in an auto should be able to learn to navigate. Dr. Nicholes believes that most accidents are cause by pilots taking off into weather which their planes cant handle. "Mechanical failures cause only about two percent of airDr. Nichplane accidents, oles said.
