'The good that has been done cant be measured, but it is obvious that people are more aware of the laws, what the Attorney General is, the function of and they know someone is there to his office, speak to the public on the interpretation of the law." "I feel emphatic that the chief legal officer erf the state should be independent of administrative control. Cooperation among the high state officers is something to strive for, but neither should control the other. The interpretation of the law should never be, subject to political influence." Looking forward to the future, the young attorney said she might seek work at the federal level later on. She is fascinated with criminal law, but explains that it is one of the most difficult to become successful in. 'Law is something you can never say you have mastered," she said. "It is a constant learning process. Your success or failure depends on bow well you learn, how well you realize you are always learning, and knowing that every situation is . status. I might consider a full length chinchilla coat a luxury, while an Arabian Sheik (with oil royalties) might consider a chinchilla bathrobe a necessity. The definition of a luxury depends upon where one stands. The dictionary considers a luxury an indulgence, as differentiated from a bare necessity. And the founding fathers were quite firm on the subject: fripperies, fancy dress, and ostentatious living were sinful luxuries and not to be permitted. Early Colonial man was supposed to want and use only the plain est, unadorned clothes and living equipment. And most of us, true to our puritan inherisinful." tance, have considered many luxuries It wasnt until that old fashioned notion of sin was erased that many people truly felt comfortable with luxuries. After all, man was born to suffer. There always was a luxury trade, of course, no matter the time or the country, but in the past, it was confined to the upper classes. While the Russian peasants whittled little eggs from wood for their childrens Easter, Russian princesses were given grandly bejeweled eggs of intricate design that artists spent years designing and making. Poor people in all lands wore roughly made clothes; nobles dressed in silk. But bit by bit, the luxury trade has grown until now it is quite a business in the United States. The notion of sin, as such, has become unfashionable, and whatever is being done at the moment is right." We are now entering the era of the common man where. luxuries are no longer sinful extravagences - they are 'necessities." Take an automobile, for instance. Starting out in life as the rich mans toy, it gradually became the rich mans status symbol. The middle class moved in on the car as the price came down and the towns t spread out and soon, even the poor could afford some kind of a four wheeled vehicle. The rich man soon had two cars, leaving the middle class no place to go but up. Today, two cars are commonplace equipment; if you want to really be outstanding, there should be three or four cars sitting in the garage. (Naturally, it makes a difference what kind these cars are - but that's another story.) If we consider a luxury an Indulgence, rather than a necessity, then most of us have luxuries. The items we consider necessities today were once the luxuries of poor people. The electric light, central beating, running water: all these wonders we take for granted as necessities' used to be true symbols of luxury. This state of affairs leaves the poor millionaire in a quandry. How can he show he has money, if almost anyone else can buy the same things he can? Mass production has leveled the luxury market and has taken so many products and objects out of the luxury class, that its harder and harder to be ahead of everyone else. You can buy a $5000 ball gown in Paris, beautiful material, exquisite cut, and wear it to a party wherein you encounter someone in a $500 copy, and another one at $69.95. The material and workmanship, naturally, are not as good - but the ideas there. And in fashion, its the idea that counts. You can buy a very expensive German camera and a month later, the Japanese have run one just like it through their duplicating machine. Naturally the price is lower. The only way a luxury can really stay a luxury is to be so expensive, so rare, and so.imposslble to duplicate that only a very tew can afford it. A minority enjoys full length chinchilla coats. A very minor minority luxuriates in chinchilla bathrobes. Very few of us have more than two Rolls Royces. And only one of us wears the Hope Diamond. What is a luxury? My definition is that it's something you can easily learn to live without. Tboreau, however, had the last word. Living alone by Walden Pond, perfectly happy in his simple life, be wrote: Most of the luxuries and many of comforts of life are not only the but positive hindrances to the elevation indis-penslb- led This raises the usual question: Are women sacrificing their femininity when they turn in the skillet and apron for tools of a profession? Mary Colbath, the first woman to be a permanent Attorney General's assistant in the State of Utah, says this doesn't have to be so if given half a chance. She staunchly maintains that women can be accepted as a mental equal and retain the all woman" identity. This is not to say that a career is more important than homemaking. , Both are important, said the lovely young lawyer, it depends on what the individual needs. My attitude has always been, get your education first; and now that I have it, 1 want to use it. Miss Colbath credits her parents enthusiastic support, but emphasizes that they never pushed her in any way. This is what I've wanted since I was about twelve years old. I always wanted a higher education, and have had a particular interest in law, politics and government." Her current position, which became effective in October, has definitely directed her course in the realization of these goals. You have no idea what law school will be like until you get into it," Miss Colbath recalled, But fortunately, I liked it. Entering law school at the University of Utah after three years of undergraduate work, with a major in English, Miss Colbath said the study of cases, lectures and discussions is primarily aimed at learning to analyze a problem and a set of facts. ..and once you define a problem, you know where to go to get the answer." She pointed out that the material is so entirely different from anything else that you dont know if you really grasp it until you take the exams. "The mortality rate is fantastic," she exclaimed, referring to the approximate fifty percent who drop out somewhere along the way. She and a friend, Janice Schutz, were the only women who graduated from the U of U College of law on June 12 of this year. Although both were from Tooele, neither knew that the other intended to go into law. Also, coincidentally, Miss Schutz Is now working on the staff of the Attorney General in maybe hes right. It is a wonderful opportunity to work with the very competent and helpful start and, she added, "I have never run into any discrimination because of being a woman." Her first two years of college were also spent in an all --girl school, Dunbarton College of Holy Crocs In Washington D. She is looking forward to court room experience as another phase of learning. Asked if she thought male lawyers might attempt to take advantage of the fact that she was a woman, particularly in court room situations, she said she didnt believe this would be a problem, particularly if a woman proved her competency. She added that she didnt feel that a Judge would allow any such harassment. Although there are presently only about 10 women lawyers in the state, Miss Colbath said she feels there is a growing trend toward women in law, and with the changing public attitude she feels that they will continue to meet with greater success. Commenting on combining marriage with a career, she said she believed it could be successful but had not given it any personal thought as yet. TU take one thing at a time," she said. In her spare time, Miss Colbath gives voluntary, service to the anti -- discrimination of Industrial Commission (especially the portion dealing with equal rights for women), and is an active member of the Young Democrats, JFK chapter. She Is an avid bridge fan, likes spectator sports, but ironically, doesn't drive a car. - She has given up singing for the moet part, after taking voice lessons since the age of nine, to dedicate herself to law. "I used to practice at least four hours a dfy, and sang la some concerts, but the day comes when you have to make a choice You cant nave both, and do either well." Her prime goal is to become as competent a lawyer as possible, whether It be in criminal law or becomes politically channeled. It doesnt make too much difference because, as she says, "The practice of law is rewarding in itself." ed It isnt difficult for a woman to be accepted in law school," Miss Colbath said. "The male students are suspicious for about the first year, until they realise that you are really serious, but there is no problem with the professors. You Just have to realize that you are dealing with a world of men." Miss Colbath took her first step into the law profession on June 21 when she became a clerk in the office of the Attorney General. She successfully completed her bar exam (a three-da- y test) on September 1, and on October 25 was appointed by Phil L. Hansen as a member of his staff.
