Show REVIEW. August 5. 1965 THE BUTTON BOX AS from PAT CUMHIHGS Hunks Of Cardboard For Pieces Of Gold I recently readaslon about a woman who spent some time traveling around the country without using any money Many other people have tried this, of course, and have either landed in jail or else ended up in eternal bondage to their My morning went by with out the need for any real There was a letter money 1 wanted to mail for which I couldn't buy a stamp. And since the post office isnt noted for saying, "You can pay me tomorrow, lady," I took a stamp from the office stamp roll. They now have my I O.U. for a nickel. Lunch time, however, presented a real problem relatives. Her trip, however, was made to publicue the great of carrying virtue credit cards, and to point up the fact that no longer is money necessary in America. It has been replaced by credit cards With a ftw pieces of cardboard, a smart operator can roam the globe traveling, buy- -. ing, sleeping, eating, and being : entertained all without the of cash : aid Theoretically, the only time one really needs money is when buying stamps, . crossing toll bridges, or going movies. Everything else, :even down to tips, seems to be taken care of very nicely .by a few little credit cards. I had occasion to test this happy theory the other day mainly because I wasn't armed with the same kind of credit cards my journalistic friend had carried. My cards, I found out, were specific and limited very good for what they were -- but not enough to keep body and soul together. ith what I had in my card holders, I couldn't even buy a peanut butter sandwich. Spreading out my little handful of cards and thinking about lunch, I sorted through them There was a driver's license and a gasoline credit card, neither of which were much use to me since I didn't have the car downtown. I could have charged a set of tires and then sold them on the street corner for cash, but that plan of action didn't seem too cricket. Next card was my library card-v- ery good for taking out books, but no help whatsoever when it came to lunch And the social security card was no good because I'm not 65 yet. (Otherwise, I might have managed breakfast in bed at a hospital ) A : when I unexpectedly found myself downtown without any This was not a demoney liberate test on my part; 1 just plain forgot to include .my coin purse when I switched handbags As I picked up my check 'for coffee and rolls to take :out and reached in my I startpurse for money ed in motion my own Tour of a Day in Salt Lake Without L'sing Money. Because the man at the cash register watched my fumbling, then "You said, most politely, can pay me tomorrow, lady " I now owe him twenty-si- x A which would get me so much as a ten cent box of animal crackers There was a health insurance card, an identification card, and my electronic it all bank number card--an- d added up to one cold answer no lunch today. Moral of the storyn The main factor to remember if you plan to exist on credit: have a good supply of the right kind of credit card on I carry a heavy, well hand loaded handbag complete with Boy Scout knife, can opener, bubble gum and nail files, but if I had to depend on my credit cards to feed and house me, 1 would end up drinking gasoline, reading cookbooks, and sleeping on a bench outside the building And that forlorn little figure at the corner of 5th and Main (peddling tires at a greatly reduced price) would be me trying to raise enough money ora ego v city-coun- ty PUBLIC InlUHElHlfi) m 53 for tomorrows breakfast. ly, : ...
