Show A6 ROCKY MOUNTAIN REV IEW, June 24, 1965 VARIETY OF ACTIVITIES New Senior Citizens Center Offers Break Fron Loneliness Nestled in the serene atmosphere of Fairmont Park is Salt Lake s newest activity center for senior citizens Born through the spirit of cooperation by the city and county, the center is located at 2269 McClellan Street, SuHouse gar "We felt we greatly needed such a facility for older persons in this area," said Mrs. J. The Mothers Club donates many volunteer hours of work at the Veteran's Hospital home is owned and maintained by the city and staffed by the Salt Lake County Recreation Department It opened for business March 26. At present the center is short on equipment, but long on activities and enthusalsm. Although the city has provided tables and chairs for the senior citizens center, the majority of furnishings have been donated by friends. Various women's clubs have donated dishes, silverware and numerous items needed to give atthe center a "homey mosphere. Elected positions go to Michael Glezes. Master Councilor, and his brother Ernest J unior Councilor, sons of Mrs. and Mrs. Ted Glezes. 295S South 15th East. Brent Kirk, son of Mrs. Luana W. Kirk, 1811 Meadow Moor, was elected Senior Councilor. Appointed positions go to Jerry Rogerson, Senior ior Bradely Endicett, Richard Logan, Sentinel; Patrick Boyles. Standard Bearer; Brad Hokansen, Almoner; Steven Glezes, Marshal; Richard Dunn, Orator. Preceptors are Tony Gles ills, Mrs. Wilson added Center is open free to all residents approaching 60 years of age or older It offers a constant break from loneliness from 10 A M to 4 P.M. five days a week At present the facitly is not open on weekends A senior citizens center Is "a slow growing thing" said Miss Marian Peterson, direc- tor of theSeniorCitizensCen-te- r, 237 South 10th East. She said a campaign is underway now to send out the word that the new center Is available andeager to accommodate clubs or Individuals Approximately 25 women and 10 men are enjoying the center each week. "Right now were feeling our way concerning a wider for the Fairmont program center. added Miss Petersen, explaining the Interests of the persons using the facility are the main concern. Although small in area and customers, the Fairmont Park Senior Citizens Center already offers many activities. Everyday, except Thursday, la hobby day. One cf the new clubs just springing up at the center is the Bird Watchers Birdfeed-er- s have been strageticly placed in tbe Senior Citizens Center garden and bird charts are provided for fast identification of the winged friends. Future plans for hie center Include an outdoor shuffle-boa- rd and a horseshoe pit.
