Some items limited in quantity, broken in size. at New reading program introduced at center Jerry Lebo, director of educational services for the Open Court Reading Program, recently held two reading workshops for the teachers and parents of children who attend school at the Uintah Learning Center. Center director Ken Morgan said Lebos involvement in training the staff in the Open Court system of combining reading, writing and spelling has been very successful. The children involved in the program have shown gains in both reading and spelling. Probably the greatest single factor of this program, according to Morgan, is the amount of success the children are experiencing which is evident by their eagerness to learn and to achieve in the Open Court program. Morgan said feeding the children at Maeser School was a fine program, but lunch served at the center allows more time for enjoyment and the teachers can spend time teaching better eating manners and other dining skills. The center staff said the main reason for the success of the program has been the willingness of the cooking staff from Maeser Elementary and the district food service personnel to make it a success. All 50 OFF Teachers at the center have also expressed their enthusiasm about the initiation of the program and have spent a great deal of time becoming proficient in its application. According to center director Ken Morgan, in the past, the children have walked to Maeser Elementary School each day to take part in the district school lunch program. With the coming of cold weather, the staff at the center and the cooking staff of Maeser decided to try serving the children in their own school. A few minor problems came up like transporting the food, where it would be served, and where the children should sit down to dine.
