Show Wednesday, December 4, 1985 Vernal Express 25 Vernal Panthers defeat Altamont team, 42 to 23 The Vernal Junior High team posted a .500 record this past week as Altamont the they thumped Longhorns, Tuesday, but lost to Wasatch, Saturday in Vernal. Vernal jumped out to a 16-- 0 lead before Altamont scored its first point on a field goal by Reed Durfey with 56 seconds left in the first quarter. Kaleo Nawahine pumped in four field goals and Eric Mulville added two in the 16-- 0 Panther eruption. George Murphy and Brian Teo also scored during the Vernal hot streak. Mulville and Nawahine pocketed a field goal each to make the score 20 to 2 at the end of the first quarter. The Panthers scored the first ten points of the second quarter on three free throws by Nawahine, field goals by Teo, Craig Huber and Russell Dart plus a charity toss by Murphy for a 30-- lead. Roy Justice scored Altamonts first points in the second quarter with 4:18 left, but Troy Logan pumped in a field goal for the Panthers. Justice added two free throws and Marc McCulloch and Dustin Mortenson tossed in one point each. Durfey popped in one free throw to make the score 36 to 7 in favor of Vernal at the end of the first half. Vernal coach Craig Monsen put his second stringers in the game for the second half and the Panthers scored only four points in the third quarter lead.
