Paul Kay to serve in Brazil Anniversary celebration includes Mexico trip The family of Grant and Mildred Hacking joined the couple for a trip to Mexico in celebration of their golden wedding anniversary. Grant and Mildred were married December 23, 1935 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Grant was born and raised in the Vernal area and has been a farmer and stockman all his life. He and Mildred were some of the first square dancers in the Basin and organized many of the original squares. Grant is the grandfather to the Maeser 2nd Ward nursery and is interested in wrestling. He graduated from Uintah High School in 1928 and completed two years at Utah Agricultural College in Logan. Mildred came from Salt Lake City to teach school. She taught in Jensen three years and in Maeser two. She is BAILEY ANDERSON directs the childrens choir that will perform in a Christmas musical. Singing are: Monique Graham, Michelle Graham, Megan Stewart, Dion Graham, Brandon now working at the visitors center at the Field House Museum in Vernal and was a substitute teacher for Sparger, Gabriel Williams, Brock Pope, Daryl Terry, Mark Nunley and Benji Arias. Not pictured are Charity Fenus and Chris and Larry Tuckey. Christians sing for Christmas many years. The Hackings served an LDS mission in 1976 and 1977 in the Washington, D.C. mission. Their children and their spouses are: James R. and Sandra Ely of Tacoma, Wash. ; Elanore and Lynton E. Scott of Trinity Center, Calif.; Berkley and Barbara Hall of Vernal; Marilyn and Bill Beesley of Draper, Utah; Cherry and Brent B. Hacking of Issaquali, Wash.; and Douglas G. and Adee Hacking of Tacoma, Wash. They have 25 grandchildren. The family said their trip to Mesa, Mexico was very enjoyable and the value of the dollar made their sovenir buying even more fun. Choir members from several of the local churches will make up the special group of vocalists. Children from these churches will be singing in a youngsters choir as part of the musical. Performers include members of the World Vision Assembly of God, Vernal Christian, Kingsbury Community, Duchesne First Baptist and Vernal First Baptist churches who will join in song to celebrate Christs birth. Religious message for Bible Week National Bible Week coincides with Thanksgiving, Americas only nonsectarian religious holiday. It can be a perfect time to discover the wisdom, guidance and comfort to be found in the Bible. This year, National Bible Week falls between November 24 and December 1, 1985. The theme is Bring your mind as well as your heart to the Bible. Knowledge like faith is a joyful possession. Hwy 40 s prima donna Beverly Sills is one of the few Americans bom singers to popularize opera to mass audiences through her concerts, television appearances and recordings. Bom Belle Silverman in Brooklyn, New York in 1929, she was nicknamed Bubbles for the exhuberance she brings to her roles. A child star, Bubbles soon became known as Beverly Sills and appeared on a popular national television talent show. At 16, billed as the youngest pnma donna in captivity she joined a touring operetta company. At the age of 24, she made her debut with the San Francisco Opera in Boitos Mefistofele. Two years later she joined the New York City Opera the company for which she has served as General Director since 1979. The soprano made her debut with the Metropolitan Opera in 1975 and has sung with leading companies around the world. The grand prize winner will represent the southern region of Utah Power and Light at the annual stockholders meeting. Matt Weeks, a student at Juab High School, was the grand prize winner in 1985. Vernal has had some winners, too. Valton and Colt Mortenson, sons of Val and Myrna Mortensen, won third place three years ago with a project comparing the heating properties of various types of wood, pound for pound. They were given a cash award of $50 and their school received a matching amount. They were also given a trophy and a certificate. Two more of the Mortensen boys have also entered the contest in the past. Dustin and Justin submitted a project on how various kinds of windows and storm windows conserve energy. They did not place, according to their mother, but did receive a tee shirt and a certificate. Mrs. Mortensen said they have been to region competition in Helper and at the University Mall in Orem. She said the exhibits on alternative energy sources and uses are very interesting, and added, The contest has been good for the boys; very educational. Gerald Homeyer, one of last years winners said, Ive always thought dreams today become the realities of tomorrow; these are the opportunities we need." Applications are due February 1st, 1986 and the contest will be held in April. The time and place will be announced later. Paul Alvin Kay son of Lawrence (Lanny) and Joy Kay has received a call to serve a 2 year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints in the Brazil Brasilia Mission. Paul graduated from Uintah High School in 1985 and is presently attending school at the University of Utah. He will enter the Missionary Training Center in Provo Dec. 19.
