Show 1 2 Vernal B$rm Fridoy, November 1, 1985 Tips for better health man influenza 01 By Kathie Brendemuhl AVMC Community Relations For most people, flu is a miserable not a particularly dangerous one. Yet, every decade or so, the relatively tame bug changes complexion causing widespread epidemics and hundreds of thousands of deaths. Even in years when the bug thats going around is milder, flu can still be dangerous, possibly fatal, for people in high-ris- k groups very young children, older persons and those with heart and lung disorders. As this years flu season (it generally runs through early March) continues, the search for a cure moves with it. Thanks to some promising research, and some new prevention efforts by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), there is renewed hope of controlling a disease that remains one of the most common illnesses in the U.S. today. According to a recent article in Good Housekeeping magazine, here are the current weapons against flu as well as a look at whats just over the horizon. A preventive vaccine given at the beginning of the flu season (it takes at least two weeks to provide immunity) has been available for a number of years but has not been widely used. It is usually percent effective. While the CDC does not feel it is necessary for everyone to have a flu shot every year, it is now recommending wider use of the vaccine to include not just the elderly, but all high-ris- k people. Doctors, nurses and other medical personnel who come into contact with high-ris- k persons are also urged to get flu shots. The shot, however, is not recommended for those allergic to eggs, from which the vacine is prepared, and pregnant women in the first trimester. virus but 70-8- 0 A new prescription drug called amantadine hydrochloride is primarily intended to treat people who have contacted the illness. If given within the first 24 to 48 hours of onset, Good Housekeeping notes, it helps reduce the severity of the symtoms and the risk of complications. In the near future, look the availability of a drug called ribavirin, effective gainst both Type A (associated with major epidemics) and Type B (which more often strikes children) viruses. Because it must be administered by an aerosol machine that sprays the drug directly into the patients lungs, so far it can only be administered in a hospital or doctors office. Soon, you might also have access to a live-virvaccine, given as nose drops rather than as an injection, which may be more effective than the killed-viru- s vaccine thats now being used. Finally, be prepared for a diagnostic test that can detect the flu in its earliest stage, and do so in less than 20 minutes. A positive diagnosis of flu now takes 3 to 4 days. The proposed tests major advantage is detection of flu in infants, children and elderly. Theres no avoiding exposure to the flu if youre in normal contact with other people. If you do get it, one of the best therapies is the traditional one, bed rest, lots of fluids, aspirin or acetaminophen for aches, pains and fever, and the remedies (decongestants, cough syrups) that are recommended to er relieve your other symptoms. If yourre looking for tips on how to avoid cold and flu viruses, remember that the bugs are most often caught when someone rubs his or her eye or nose after having touched the hand of an infected person. Keeping the hands away from the face, then is a very good idea for prevention. Coughing and sneezing are definite signs of a cold, but they are much less likely to pass a cold from one person to another. Sneezes and coughs contain very little of the virus. Remember too, that taking aspirin reduces the symptoms of a cold, but increases the amount of virus in the nose. If you take aspirin, be extra careful not to touch your nose. Merely washing your hands under running water for 30 seconds effectively washes away most of the virus that may be present. And dont worry about venturing out into the wintry weather. Theres absolutely no evidence that cold weather alone will give you a virus infection or even worsen the one you may already have. colors were the basis of the simple costumes worn by the preschool children for the Halloween play. Diseases will often increase the dogs need for certain nutrients and decreases their ability to process other nutrients. The age of a dog will affect their protein, mineral and energy levels. These levels will continue to change throughout the life of the dog. Environment can also have a major influence on the energy needs of canines. Extremes of heat, cold, humidity or stress from any source can lead to the need for an energy dense diet. Dogs that tend to be high strung will generally need higher energy diets than other dogs. Pregnant and nursing dogs require increased amounts of energy, protein, vitamins and certain minerals. The ingredients used to make a dog food contain different nutrients. A good dog food will contain the correct amounts of quality ingredients to insure that the dog gets the nutrient mix that is best for them. Many companies manufacturer several brands and lines of dog food to meet the dogs changing needs including special food for puppies, overweight dogs and older dogs. Different dogs even similar breeds will have different nutritional needs.
