Seven fifty hsi almost halt much again as the five and a quarter of 1925 and we are giad to be abi to offer that much. . Of course, this price is for seed that is in our warehouses or can be delivered soon lor market quotations are always subject to change. What Will Alfalfa Seed Be Worth? That is a really important question for most of us isnt it? Up to date we have posted njo prices for the same reason that we did not pest a price on sweet clover until a few ays ago A very famous man once said, Be sui you are right, then go ahead. We want to be leasonably sure the price is right before we puj it ::K When we talk prices we want to be able to stand behind the price with the money to buy the seed and pay for it. You know we have our money invested and pay our taxes here just the same asl our seed grower friends. If you make money raising seed w have a chance to make some money handling and selling your seed. Thats our real business after all we are working for you. Helping you to grow, harvest and thresh your crops, preparing them for market storing them buying them, aid selling them again, are all parts of the service we aim to give you Now, the crop is grown, practically all harvested, threshing will soon be finished if the weather permits. It remains for and the us to prepare your seed for market, buy it, gaiil While it may not appear so to you, this buying and selling is a real' service. We still have seed on hand that we bought last year but could not sell. We can not sell this seed today for as much money as it has cost us and there is a large quantity of it, too. What would you have dome if you had', not been able to convert your seed cron into cash last Tyear? It is a service to put up the money and take the risk off your hands isnt it? find a market, and sell fit The quality of servied' rendered by the buyer depends on the pays. He gives seller good service if he takes all the seller wishes to dispose1 of and pays FAIR PRICES for it. We want to give you good buying service. We have not yet put a price on alfalfa seed because we are not yet reasonably sure what a fair price for alfalfa seed is going to fthe quantity he takes and the prices he b. By a FAIR PRICE we mean the highest price we can pay and expect to sell the seed again for enough to get our money back along with whatever expenses we have to pay and a reasonable profit for our work, risk, and trouble. In other words we want to pay you the best price we can for your seed and still live and stay in business. You se, the price we are going to offer you for your seed Uepends directly on what w are getting or expecting to get for it wliien we sell it again. If after the market does open, we find Duchesne October i 1, 1926. that we can sell for more money than we expected, the price we cam pay will go up If we cannot get as much as we expect, the price will have to go down Supply and demand govern all prices. So far as alfalfa seed is concerned, the supply is alfalfa seed carried oyer from previous seasons, new alfalfa seed harvested this year, and imported alfalfn' sied. We da not know just how much alfalfa seed was carried over from last year. The new crop will fall considerably shiort of 'the 1925 crop, but we cannot tell yet how far short. Imported alfalfa seed is subject to the new staining law and may not come in so freely. The supply of alfalfa seed is yet to be figured. This supply is owned by the growers and dealers who are not going to let go of their seed unless they feel that they are getting a fair price for themselves The demand is even more difficult to figure because the ultimate demand for alfalfa seed is for planting purposes only and there will be very little alfalfa planted until next spring. Merchants and dealers have to estimate the amount of seed think they can sell for spring planting and the pricie they they can expect to be able to pay for it. Then if they can buy at that price they purchase what they expect to need during the fall and winter and early spring. What they actually buy makes up the active demand. These dealers naturally want to buy for as little money as possible to get the quantity and quality of seed they expect to be able to sell. With the holders of the supply on the one hand wanting aH th1 can get and the dealers and purchases on the other hand wanting to buy seed for as littl money a,s possible, it is easy to se that the price per hundred pounds will be that price at which the buyer and seller agree the one to sell, thg o their to If the seUfTS have a larger supply than the buyer buy. wants they will bej anxious to sell and competing against each other for the sale they will take less money per hundred pounds. .If the buyers want more seed than the sellers have, they will corhete againist each other and work the price up to higher levels. Thus the price is finally set where supply and demand get together and the trade is madp. Supply or demand or both may chamge in a minute so that the nxt trade is very likely to be at a different price. money they Whenl the price on our blackboards is increased you catn be sure that someone wants seed more than we thought. If the price goes down you know just as surely that they do not want it as much as we thought they did. We knpw that what we have written here does not tell you what you will get for your alfalfa seed this fall We have trieri to explain th reasons why you will get whatever you do get. We are ready to pay $7.50 for clean bright sweet clover seed because we believe that is a fair price. We have not posted any prices on alfalfa because we want to give you a fair price but wtf do not know just what is going to be a fair price. We are trying to serve you by Retting you the best price we can for your seed but that pricf3 is bound to be governed to by the law of supply and demand. Up to date we are not able figure either the supply or the demand. When the supply can be figured the dealers and! other purchasers will probably be ready to figure their needs or demands and the prices they will be willing to pay Then we can make some - trades and get soirr prices ertablished so that we can figuip a price that we think is fair to offer you for your seed. We hone that this price will not only be fair as based on suly and demand but that' it will also be high eritough that you will say this is a good price.
