Show OF LOSS assorting teller of sub treasury at chicago accused of appropriating attempted to get rid of one thou sand dollar bills and suspicion of detectives Is aroused money was stolen eighteen months ago chicago the mystery of the theft of from the united states sub treasury a year and a halt ago one of the largest losses the govern ment has ever suffered in this man ner Is believed to have been solved by the arrest at an early hour sunday of george W fitzgerald others are believed to have been implicated in the crime which tor months complete ly baffled the government secret ser vice men fitzgerald was an assort ing teller under assistant united states treasurer william bolden week suspicion at the time of th theft february 20 1907 rested on him but so plausible was his story and so intense his apparent interest in discovering the real culprit that in terest ceased to center on him much work was done on the theory that the crime had been perpetrated by a colored man meanwhile fitz gerald was discharged from the gov eminent employ for culpable degli gence in allowing such a theft to bo consummated under his very eyes the money stolen had been used and was tied up in packages some of which had been marked for destruct alon in washington any of them would readily have passed anywhere except for the large denominations none of the bills was under and borne were of the 1 and 5 de nominations the 1000 ones it was in attempting to pass two of the 1000 bills that suspicion was again aroused against fitzgerald he had also purchased a home and had been engaged in extensive purchase of eggs involving the outlay of a considerable sum of money |
