Show Lakeside Review South, Wednesday, Bountiful Lions Help Guide Dogs BOUNTIFUL - The Bountiful Lions Club has donated some of the proceeds from its recent Turkey Shoot to the Utah State Guide Dog Association. The organization is currently helping to train 55 dogs for use as guide dogs for the blind. Members of the organization include youths in clubs throughout Utah. Frank Burns, president of the Bountiful Lions Club, said the annual Turkey Shoot, held Nov. 8 at the Lions Range east of the city, was the most successful shoot the club has ever had. He said club members expect to make other contributions in the coming months to organizations and institutions that help the blind. Helping the blind and deaf, he said, is the major goal of the Lions Club. Our Lions Club members believe training guide dogs for the blind is an important program. The dogs come from Guide Dogs For the Blind, a organization in San Rafael, Calif., and are kept in the homes of Utah for a year or more so the dogs can learn to relax within a family situation. Burns said the young 9 to 8 years old, take the dogs to the movies, to restaurants, if permission from' the manager is granted, and to other places that the family goes. When the dogs are about 18 months old they are returned to Guide Dogs for the Blind for six more months of intensive training with an instructor, said Burns. Then the dog meets the blind master and they live and train together for a month under the supervision of an instructor, After that training, he said, the dog and his blind master become a team. The working life of a guide dog is eight to 10 years. The reason these three kinds of dogs are used is because they can withstand temperature changes of 100 degrees in 24 hours and still function. That kind of change is often encountered when blind people travel from one part of the country to another in a short time. Burns said.
