October 3, 1984 ,7A Gold Mine of Childrens Books Are Stacked at PERC A SUSAN TANNER HOLMES Review Correspondent FARMINGTON Most peodont realize that a gold mine of helpful books on subjects from divorce, to death, to lying, to table manners or self esteem are just around the corner in the Davis County School Districts Parent Education Resource Centers childrens literature collection. Literature is very effective. It opens the communication processes. A child doesnt know sometimes what questions to ask, said Jennifer Miller, 2160 S. Orchard in Bountiful. Parents sometimes talk to children in adult language and dont get down to their level. The books put the information in simple form. We adults sometimes skip the little facts, said Mrs. Miller. Sometimes it is more valuable to have someone other than mom always saying it. Reading with the child with this kind of literature opens up the parentchild relationship and opens the communication channels, said Mary Hughes, PERC director. Youngsters who are experiencing difficult situations can identify, through reading, with other children who are encountering and solving similar problems, said Mrs. Hughes. They see hope for themselves as well as learn new problem solving and ple feel good about my role as a parent and makes my efforts more effective." It has always been amazing to me that we can get into space and to the moon-- we can do everything, but get along with each other," said Mrs. Hughes. I teach the personal interaction skills to my children. If they want to be great at the piano or in math, I can get them a teacher, but I have to provide them with the personal relationship skills to deal with others, said Mrs. Miller. Recently a couple came in because they were having trouble getting their children to clean their bedrooms. They took out the book, What Do You Do When Mom and Dad Say Clean Your Room. It is a step by step help. Later they said that at 6 a.m. the next morning the vacuum was going upstairs. When they asked the son why, he explained that he finally knew how to begin and not feel so overwhelmed with the clean-u- p job, said Mrs. Newton. Very seldom do I get through a book. The subject matter ignites whats on their mind, said Mrs. Miller. This is where you need the lis tening skills and then the problem solving skills. Reading is only a part of it," said Mrs. Hughes. The childrens literature section can help reading children with valuable role models. Childrens literature can help children understand and prepare for new and sometimes frightening experiences like going to the hospital, to preschool, to the dentist or having a new baby come home. PERC Center personnel are consistently helpful. It is really the first place to go. If I need more help they can refer me, said Mrs. Miller. We welcome suggestions of books parents have found helpful, said Mrs. Hughes. If we dont have the book, we have a book finder that lists the books and perhaps one of the other libraries will have it. The PERC Center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. with extended hours on Wednesday until 7 p.m. A parent planning a first visit overview should try to plan to spend about 45 minutes. A small play area is available for children. Books can be checked out for two weeks and filmstrips, projectors or tape players for one week. JENNIFER MILLER of Bountiful reads one of the books from the childrens literature section of the Parent Education Resource Center library to her daughters, Amy, 2, and; Kimberly, 5. coping skills. When the parent and child are reading together, it is a time to sit close and put your arm around the child and talk about their worries, open avenues of communication and just spend time together, said Jan Newton, librarianreceptionist. Books like, Saying What You Mean by Joy Wilt are very productive. Parents and children learn involvement and listening skills, said Mrs. Hughes. Other books include A Terri- Thing Happened At Our ble I House Today: Mother Went To Work, or Divorce is a Growing Up Problem, or activities for children when they are not well. The library has books for just about every specific problem a family could encounter. Our books are carefully chosen. They deal with difficult situations, new experiences, crisis situations such as death, divorce; they help children formulate value systems; gain a healthy self esteem; and gain self understanding and understanding of others, said Mrs. Hughes. appreciate any resource I can get. It gives me insight into behavior problems and how to teach them. Of course it is the parents responsibility to teach the child how to live in society," I said Mrs. Miller. But if Im going to direct my child, its not just going to come, she said.
