Participating in school activities builds self esteem and helps students to have a feeling of success which could remain with finery-tuxed- way--may- t The scene changes as other students quietly prepare for bed, feeling despondent, left out, disappointed. They have been aware for weeks of the special plans being made for the prom. Friends have discussed their dates, dresses, suits and dinner plans endlessly. These teenagers wanted to be a part of the magical event but were unable to attend be- -. cause they could not afford the price tag that was placed on the evening. . ; i , Lets look at some cold hard facts, for example, the following two activities which are being priced -out of the reach of many students: 1) Most high school choirs require the boys to purchase a special suit, shirt, tie and shoes and the girls a long dress. The choirs do not perform often, os the outfits are worn infrequently. Im sure that there are young people who would love to sing with a well trained choir who never audition or register for music because of the suits and dresses that are required. se 2) The price is higher than necessary because the dance is not held at the school. Boys must buy or rent a tuxedo. Flowers are in order. Pictures are taken at the dance so the boys are expected to buy a colored photo for both themselves and their dates. Dinner is usually lavish and most teenage . boys feel compeled to furnish what is expected by their peers. When I was in high school, every girl who wanted to march on the school drill team was able to do so. We had one dress which we wore to school one day a week, and one pair of shoes. It was a great experience for me. At this time things are quite different. At one Davis county high school, I was told that uniforms for the girls drill team and money for a drill camp will cost as high as $900 per girl per year. The drill teams have become very elite groups. Girls buy expensive dresses and accessories which Girls chosen to be on the teams usually have had are seldom worn more than once. Parents sigh and years of training in dance and marching. The drill frown on such lavish expenses, but neither the teams are very selective. Many girls never even dream of auditioning because they could not afford school, the administration, the parents or the students seem to know how to make a change in what the $900 necessary for enrollment. This is quite an enormous amount for teenagers to raise themselves or for parents on budget to give to their children. Decisions as to whether or not one can attend often are decided on whether one can afford the dance. The article about the problems at the Davis County Animal Shelter on August 1, brought reality home. That shelter, and others like it, show us that as a people, we are not responsible pet owners. That story really touched me, as I'm sure it touched everyone - against disease. I believe that there are good, kindhearted people who live here in Utah. We need to, as a people, show our kindness to our animals by, being responsible pet owners. It is not fair that shelter employees have to clean up our mess or have bad dreams for weeks about putting dogs to sleep. It takes so little to prevent all the suffering that is going on around us. If nothing else, consider the inconvenience of trying to find homes for the unwanted puppies or kittens. We need to encourage our friends and neighbors to be responsible pet owners. I believe that with a few dollars and a little effort and love we could stop the There are so many innocent animals that are suffering needlessly. If all of us would spend the few dollars it takes to immunize and alter our pets, we wouldnt need animal shelters. There are many wonderful veterinarians in the area who charge very little to do us all such a great service. We need to think about our responsibilities as pet owners. We need to keep our animals from wandering loose to be ran over or exposed to sickness.
