"If a person is allergic to bees and is stung it can sometimes be a matter of only minutes before says Dr. David they die, Carlquist. He suggested people who are allergic to bees carry a bee sting kit, available at pharmacies. These are not for people who just get a bee sting, he emphasized, These kits arc for people who react to bee stings in an allergic manner. Dr. Carlquist said the medication in these kits could make the average person very ill. Persons should avoid attracting bees in the summertime by GARBAGE TRUCK got away in Centerville last week, when it flew down a steep road (540 West) and went through a stop sign at 400 East. After landing on a parked Camaro, it rolled over an embankment and landed in a residents yard. The black widow is found in woodpiles and basements, sheds and garages. It is recognized by s its red stomach, but this trait is not always observable, says Dr. Carlquist. Symptoms of a poisonous spider bite include dull muscle pain, muscle cramps, abdominal pain and cramps, headache, dizziness, drooping of the eyelids, rash, respiratory distress, nausea, hour-glas- vomiting, increased saliva, weakness, and an increase in skin temperature, he said. Victims are treated in the hos- pital with an antivenin which neutralizes the venom. Dr. Carlquist said. Ticks arc another problem in the summer in this area, he said. Taking a trip outdoors doesnt mean leaving common sense at home, says Suzanne Richins, director of the emergency depart-- , ment at McKay-De- e Hospital Center. While packing up ones cares and woes, some basic first aid equipment should be packed, too, in order to ensure safe and proper treatment of possible injuries. People should limit their activities to their physical abilities, stated Dr. David Carlquist, emergency department physician. Someone should not attempt to climb a mountain when he isnt able to jog a quarter of a mile at home, he said, if you want to take a trip and do some hiking, get into shape before you leave, Dr. Carlquist advised. Many outdoor injuries involve simple bruises and cuts, Mrs. Richins said. Treatment of these injuries can be handled effectively by almost anyone some basic rules and a bit of first aid are followed. Dr. Carlquist said he would recommend getting' current on tetanus shots to people of all ages. Some older people have never even had a tetanus shot, he said. It is really too bad when someone dies from a simple cut because they werent immunized for tetanus.. When treating a cut it is important to stop the bleeding by applying pressure, says Dr. Carlquist. We do not recommend tourniquets, but pressure at the site of the wound. When the bleeding is stopped, clean it thoroughly. The wound can be cleaned with plain water, or regular liquid detergent and water, says Mrs. Richins. The sight of a wound gushing blood may be frightening, she continued, but if the accident has been a fall, or something which may result in a fracture or concussion, the whole patient should be treated. What appears to be the most obvious injury, a wound that is bleeding, may in fact be the least life . r Glow Room t Surf & Turf 5-- f TIMBERLYNNS I Never Give Up With Drowning Victim alive today who was underwater for at least 45 minutes. The water was very cold which may have contributed to the fact the child survived. Even so, the fact the child is alive remains incredible but possible. A good rule of thumb is to never give up when attempting to resuscitate a victim who ap- -. pears to have drowned. Keep trying until you are physically unable to carry on any longer, says Dr. David Carlquist, emergency department physician at McKay-De- e Hospital Center. Suzanne Richins, emergency director, says swimmers should A child is never swim or dive alone. It is really too bad in the summertime, when everyone wants to get out and have a good time, that we see so many accidents involving water. Many of these victims are children, she added. Dr. Carlquist says he feels that many accidents involving water also involve alcohol. People drink when they are on an outing and lose a sense of control, he said. Victims of accidents are not always the ones who have been doing the drinking, he said. resuscitation may be used on drowning vic Mouth-to-mou- th tims, notes Mrs. Richins. If the victim is injured because of a diving accident, rescuers should take care in moving him. They should be treated much like auto accident victims, she advised. She explained that moving the victim at all should be done only if necessary and to get the person clear of the water. Mrs. Richins advised transporting a diving accident victim with care, and if possible with the help of a spinal support like some type of board.
