STUDENTS at Woods Cross High have Natural WOODS CROSS Helpers Program is the name of a new peer counseling group at Woods Cross High School. Patterned after the peer coun-- ! seling groups in effect in other Utah high schools, the group was established to help students deal with the peer pressure arid other alcohol and drug related problems. Under the joint leadership of ; ! Austin Childs of the Davis J County Mental Health group and Lowell Oswald, a teacher at the high school, the group meets every Wednesday at 7:15 a.m. at ! Woods Cross High. The group is made up of sever- J al volunteer students who have agreed to be trained in peer counseling. The students then choose a candidate with which to Work, to solve any drug or al- cohol related problems the friend may have. According to Oswald this peer J counseling program is now being used at Olympus High and has met with great success. Many times when a troubled student t wont turn to teachers or parents for help, they will turn to a friend, he said. What were try-- t ing to do is train these students J and teach them the counseling skills that they need in order to help their friends. Oswald said the main emphasis of the group will be to provide a support group within the school for kids who have not only drug and alcohol problems but problems of low also. He said the group will work to build unity and promote positive feelings in the school. Oswald said he hopes to establish a class next year for the volunteer students, during which they would continue their coun-- , seling education and learn new 5 self-estee- m skills on how to approach a friend in need of help. He explained that the students involved in the class would prepare presentations for elementary and junior high students to inform them of the dangers involved in making unwise choices regarding the use of drugs and alcohol Student president, Scott Hos- kins, said he got involved in the program because he saw the ef--. feet that drug use was having on his .peers and he hoped to be able to learn how to help his friends. The students expressed the Concern that many ' of the kids involved with drugs felt they had no where to turn for wide variety of problems are addressed. Lee Whitesides, who the drive to estabspear-heade- d : lish the parent support group, said that to her knowledge this is the only parent support group in the Bountiful area and parents of any area teenagers are welcome to attend the sessions.
