Steve Ashbaker completed the 3.1 mile, 5,000 meter, course in 16 minutes 55.91 seconds. He averaged just more than a 5 minute mile for the race. His time this year did not beat the course record of 15 minutes, 22 seconds set last year by Doug Friedli, a former Weber State College runner. Taking second place with a run of ,17 minutes, 1.46 seconds was Mark Elliott of Mapleton, Utah. Third place in the mens division was won by Reese Kidman of Salt Lake City, He finished in 17 minutes, 5.88 seconds. In the womens division, Christi Chidester of Kearns crossed the finish line first with a run of 20 minutes, 48.13 seconds, averaging about a mile in 7 minutes. She was less than one minute ahead of Jill Peacock of Sandy, Utah, who placed second at 21 minutes, 25.73 seconds. Third place winner in the womens division was Linds Williamson of Murray, Utah, who ran the course in 22 minutes 9.76 seconds. Some 201 runners entered the event, which was broken down into 15 age groups, starting at age 1 and under and going up . to 65 and over. The Salt Lake City Track Club newsletter editor has ranked the yearly event as one of the top 10 races in the state of Utah. Runners from as far north as Idaho Falls, Idaho, and as far south as Mapleton, Utah, travelled to Bountiful in the early morning hours to enter the run.
