Show Lakeside Review North, Wednesday, Dec. 14, 1983 3C Falcons Split Two Games While Lancers Struggle CLEARFIELD The Clearfield Falcons split two games last week in basketball action in preparation for the upcoming Region One race, and registered a couple of firsts for their program along the way. Last Wednesday the Falcons traveled to West High, and for the first time since Craig Hansen became the head coach, Clear-Hel- d defeated the Panthers in pre-seas- . Salt Lake City. In Fridays game against Bingham, the Falcons werent as for- tunate, losing in the final four seconds. At West, Hansen expected a tough game and he got it. But in the end the Falcons were too much to handle and managed win. Its been a long time 8 since we have beat them down there, Hansen said. They were a tough scrappy team, but we them and dejust served to win the game, I felt. When Bingham came to town on Friday everyone knew the Falcons were in for a fight. The Miners had an undefeated record, which was slightly more shiny when they left. But it took two pressure free throws with just four seconds showing on the 1 win. clock to notch the It was an excellent game, Hansen recalled. It was a fast paced game with both teams fast breaking a lot and both pressing the whole game. The determining factor was that they shot a better free throw percentage than 72-5- out-play- ed 73-7- we did. Hal Schofield sank two gutty of his own in the final minute to tie the game, but the Falcons could not control the ball until the last second foul put Bingham on the line. BOUNTIFUL Work on your defense, coaches like to say in :preseason, the offense will take care of itself. At Bountiful High, that axiom has been put into practice, but Coach Mike Hall said it is time for his offense to start coming around. We need to start running our pattern a little better, said Hall about his offense, which is facing mostly zone defenses this year. Nobody mans you, Hall said, which makes hitting outside shots even more important. Brent Bouvang, a 4 senior, leads the Braves in scoring with a average and has lived up to his preseason billing, said Hall. Guard Troy Rawlings has also played well for Bountiful, averaging 12 points a game. In fact, said Hall, the whole team is playing pretty good." But even though the Braves have won six straight since their season opening loss to Clearfield, Hall said his club needs to especially on ofimprove sophomore and the other kids are new at the (varsity), game. VIEWMONT Although his Vikings now have a 1 record for the season, Viewmont Basketball Coach Ron Johansen is still waiting for a few of his players to develop and provide a more balanced 5-- scoring attack. So far this season, the Vikings have looked inside to junior Bret Cloward when they are under pressure and need points. We are- - always successful when were looking for him, said Johansen. And Cloward responded well in three games last week in the Box Elder Classic. In the tournament opening, loss to Box Elder, Cloward scored 28 points, gathered 17 rebounds and had five blocked shots. But Johansen said his other players got to the point where we threw the ball to him and watched him play." The reason for Clowards performance under pressure is expedience, Johansen said.
