Uh, Mr. Scout, can you put down the computer printout for a few minutes and join us. Just have a seat over there. Now, can you tell us how things are shaping up among our seven area high school football teams? Sure. Things are going pretty much as expected, particularly in Region record Four. Davis has a perfect and played its best game of the season last Friday when they beat Woods 5-0 Cross. v t n V Much has been made this year of the Davis defense. Is it that good? Yes, it is. The Darts have given up only 2 points this year, and who could find fault with that? Much has been made of Davis offensive ability to mount drives, keeping the defense off the field. But people forget that many of the Darts go both ways, so they are on the field all the time anyway. Lets face it, and five teams already have, Davis has a good defensive team. What about the rest of the region? 1 " ", Photo by Robert Regan , ' . BRIAN MUGGLESTON of Woods Cross shows near perfect form in blocking a Davis High kick in. last Fridays game. DaviS Chalkboard Plans Become Reality BARRY KAWA Review think it was our best game yet, said Sawley, whose Darts are now 0 in region play and 0 overall. We did everything the way we wanted to. I was really surprised because Woods Cross is a strong team. They just didnt seem to get anything generated and get going. Davis opened the game with offensive line standout Sean Kilgrow, who injured his knee in the Clearfield game, back in the lineup. Kilgrow and Company opened huge holes throughout the game for the vis backs. On Davis first play from scrimmage, Jeff Hammer rambled 49 yards to the Woods Cross 27. Box Elder Coach Mike Madeo noticed It. Layton Coach Gary Hansen said It has happened before to his team this d year. And, most importantly, the reflected It. , . It was a Laytpn letdown, a mental relaxation that Box Elder used to hand Layton its first loss of the season last Friday, The letdown didnt come from anything Box Elder did, mind you. In fact, the Lancers had just scored on their second possession vof the game to lead 0 in the first quarter. V I think they got happy too soon, dont. you? asked Madeo after his team spoiled Laytons hpmecoming. I think homecoming has a tendency to affect a team adversely, Madeo said, The letdown was understandable. The ' Lancers scored so easily in the first quarter. Two dive plays to Tom Kidd and Mike Tucker set up the final scoring play of the drive, a pass from Brian Bailey to tight end Darryl Lacey. And, if that didnt look easy enough, Layton fumbled the snap on the PAT, but kicker Robert Shumway picked the ball up and, by golly, there was Lacey in the end zone. A short pass later the Lancers led But they were to be the Lancers only points of the game. After the two teams exchanged turnovers. Box Elder used the remainder of the quarter to drive 57 yards to the end zone. for six points. The conversion was good and the game was tied, The main play in the Bees drive, and in the rest of the game for that matter, was a counter play over the, middle. Box Elder used the play successfully against Roy the previous week, and it worked against the Lancers as well, Its just a counter play, said Madeo, shrugging off the plays success, Hansen said the counter hurt, the Lancers because of Box Elders blockings They were just blowing us out, he explained. No, Im simplifying it for you folks. Naturally, the computer is much more complicated than that. Go on. .Well, Highland, which is also 0 in region play, has been lucky in its two league games. The Rams have won both of those games on the last play from scrimmage, one against Viewmont and the other against Bountiful. View- mont has been on the opposite end of the spectrum from Highland. The Vikings have lost two region games by a total of four points, with the most recent loss coming against Highland in overtime. Bountiful looks as though its offense has developed just in time for the region season. The only team that looks like its out of contention for a playoff berth is East. Care to make any predictions? In high school football? Are you kidding?- Those games are as predictable as a fickle woman. You never know what will happen next. How do things look over in Region One? Even, very even. Box Elder looked good in last weeks win over Layton, and the Bees are on top of the region with a 0 record. Layton, meanwhile, with the loss, and has dropped to allowed 35 points in the last two weeks. That statistic wouldnt seem so bad for most teams, but the Lancers looked formidable in preseason, holding two teams scoreless. Three other teams each Roy, Clearfield and Bonneville records in region play. have What about Clearfield? The Falcons won their first game last week didnt they? Yes, and they could win a few more in league play. Clearfield lost three of its four games in the last minute of play or in overtime. That should tell you that the Falcons are not that bad of a football team. Give us a report on Roy. Geez, if you can figure those guys out let Coach Ernest Jacklin know. The Royals are 2 this year, and those two losses were lopsided against Judge Memorial and Box Elder. Surrounding those two games are wins against Bountiful, Ogden and Bonneville. The defense has played well in most of the games this season, but the offense is sporadic. Any prediction for this region? Naw,. Ill leave the predictions to you sportswriters.
