Show Lakeside Review North, Wednesday, Sept. 28. 1983 Lower Than National Rate Fewer Teens Pregnant In 1981, Utah experienced a decline in the rate for pregnancies among white teenagers 5 to 17 years old, from 45.1 per 1,000 females in 1980 to 42.5 per 1,000 in 1981. (The pregnancy rate is defined as the number of live births plus induced abortions per 1,000 females in the 1 population.. From 1975 to 1981 the Utah teenage pregnancy rates for white and nonwhite females continued to be lower than national 7 figures. For white year olds, Utahs rate goes from 36.6 in 1975 to 42.5 in 1981 (a 16 percent increase). The comparable United States white rate goes from 46.1 in 1975 to 50.0 in 1980 (a 9 percent increase). This and other comparative information on Utah teenagers is included in a new publication by the Utah Department of Health, Teenage Pregnancy in Utah: 15-1- 1975-198- 1. were 106.3 in 1975 and 126.6 in 1980 (a 19 percent increase). ' The national pregnancy rate 9 for nonwhite year olds in 1980 was 232.6, approximately double the Utah rate in 1980. The pregnancy rate for Utahs nonwhite 18 and 19 year olds increased by 49 percent between 1975 (98.1) and 1981 (145.9). Nationally, there was a four percent increase for the comparable population. As noted earlier, in 1981 the 7 rate for white teenagers years old declined from the previous year. Utah nonwhite 7 years olds as well as white and 9 nonwhite year olds, all experienced an increase in their pregnancy rates in 1981. UNDA BITTER HAS RETURNED The report also provides teenage pregnancy data by county of residence for Utah. In general, the rural counties have higher fertility rates (the number of births per 1,000 women ages and the urban counties higher rates of induced abortions. Because the fertility rate is a greater proportion of the pregnancy rate the rural counties tend to have higher pregnancy rates than the urban counties. The health problems associated with teenage pregnancies are also discussed in the report and are of particular concern to the Department of Health. It appears that rates of low birth weight infants and infants with congenital malformation may be declining for women at all ages. The report also compares 1980 pregnancy rates for white and nonwhite teenagers (15-1female residents of thirty states. Utah ranks third with its fertili9 ty rate of 64.6 per 1,000 year old white females. Wyoming ranks first (76.3) and Connecticut ranks last (24.3). For induced abortions Utah ranks next to last with a rate of 12.8. Wyoming has the lowest rate (10.0) and California the highest (46.0)- . Utahs white teenage pregnancy rate of 77.4 ranks 1th. The highest rate is for California (95.9) and the lowest is Connecticut (47.7). Utahs nonwhite teenagers have rates that rank consistently low, 23rd or 9) The national pregnancy rate 7 for nonwhite teenagers years of age in 1980 was 116.0, more that double the Utah nonwhite pregnancy rate. The Utah 7 nonwhite years old preg1975 was 41.3 and in rate nancy in 1981 was 53.5 (a 29 percent increase). The comparable national population showed no change in the pregnancy rate during the same interval. 9 For white year olds the Utah pregnancy rate was 104.2 in 1975 and 125.3 in 1981 (a 20 percent increase).
