Show CD Library Patrons Make Quilt Lakeside Review North, Wednesday, Aug. 17, 1983 By SHELLEY KANCITIS Review Correspondent If you checked out a ROY book at Library chances whether the Southwest Branch in Roy last week, are you were aske,d you knew how to quilt. As part of a fund raising project for a planned addition to the library, the Friends of the Southwest Branch Library solicited volunteers to make a queen sized quilt. The quilt is the main door prize at a library benefit dinner scheduled for November 7. For several days, the quilt was. set up in the library meeting area where more than 20 volunteers worked to complete it. Made of orange and brown patchwork, the quilt has more than 144 squares. Each square represents one hour of hand- work. Laura Homer, a volunteer, prepared the quilt for framing. Nancy Martinez, head librarian of the Southwest Branch, said the quilt is worth approximately $500. It will be easy to spot our booth this year because we hope to operate out of the back-u- p bookmobile, said Martinez. In addition to collecting donations for the quilt, she said the library will sponsor a new and used book sale at the Roy Days booth. Layton. The Barnard Avenue residents fclaim the creek does not rurt' ; through their property and ques-- ; tion why their street should be ,used in case of flooding. He said construc-- t tion would begin shortly therea- t waters) with a concrete road. Should Barnard Creek overflow its banks again, water will be routed down Barnard Avenue. Blackburn said he. feels this is the only prudent thing to do for all. the taxpayers. He said several federal agencies have offered assistance to build the road. One. agency is considering funding the entire project, which would mean the city would not need to dip into local tax monies to repair the ; ' road. He said if the residents do obtain an injuction against building the concrete road I think the residents (of Barnard Avenue) will suffer miserably. He said residents not only will continue to have poor access to their homes on the damaged street, but also the city will not be able get emergency vehicles such as fire trucks and ambulances up the street. . : .Barnard Avenue was damaged ' in June when Barnard Creek be-gan overflowing its banks. Resi- -. dents who live near the creek I flocked the creek from above and sent the water down Barnard Avenue, impacting property owners there, charges Linda Murdock, who lives on the street. Instead of returning the water to its creek channel, the city allowed the situation to continue, she said. Barnard Avenue residents are considering a separate lawsuit against those who blocked the creek, she said. She said the city bears much of the responsibility for the damage to the road because the situation was allowed to continue by the I We have a lot of good hardback fiction for our used book sale, said Martinez. Martinez said that for a donation of one dollar, people can purchase tickets to enter the drawing for the quilt. Tickets are available at -the library and the librarys Roy Days booth. He said he has tried his best to respond to the concerns of the neighbors. He said that he and other council members have met with the residents of the Street on numerous occassions, sometimes even calling special meetings. Ms. Murdock said Barnard Avenue also is not listed on a federal map as a flood plain area. A concrete road, however, would mean a change in the streets status.
