He graces the new foyer with his eight foot presence and stands ready to guard school spirit and traditions with the same majesty as when he stood in a nearly inaccessible area of the Monte Cristo forests, guarding the back country. Last May the senior class of Layton High commissioned a world renowned wood carver, Betty Wilcox, to carve a wooden realized that she would not be able to use either the clay model or the picture as a guide for the L JOHN SAYLOR huge Lancer. They did give me an understanding of what a Lancer stance would be like though, she said. She was not able to use the model or picture because of what she described as what I like best (about working with living trees) and the biggest, problem. You have to work within the confines of your material,-- she said. Originally she had intended to Lancer, the symbol of the school, as their gift to Layton High. In June of last year Mrs. Wilcox and two professional wood cutters traveled to the Monte Cristo area to find just the right tree, brought it down, and hoped it would dry out to be good quality wood. The wood from a juniper tree weighed more than a ton and only special equipment brought the huge tree out from its forest home and moved to Mrs. Wilcoxs studio in Layton. Once it was there, she stripped it of its bark and waited for the sap to bleed out. As it dried out, Mrs. Wilcox said she studied it a lot to see how I could carve a Lancer out of it. She is especially renowned for her carvings of Indians from trees and has said that she never knows quite what Ill find when she begins to carve a tree. The end result depends on what she finds in the tree and how it has grown. This project was unique in that it was the first time she had set out with a specific subject . ; KAYSVILLE i carve the Lancer with arm back, ready to throw his lance, but as the work proceeded and The Kays-vill- e selected two Davis High students to attend Boys State this summer.
