Show NEVADAS WILD HORSES A SERIOUS PROBLEM an opportunity for fun if not for much profit some of our emery county broncho busters have been taking a keen in terest in the wild horse business since it was erroneous reported that the nevada legislature had resolved to rid the ranges in that state of these animals several cit zens of this county have been speculating upon the possibility and profit of driving out a band of these wild horses to some point where they may be corralee corr aled caught and shipped to some market for their informal on the following pointers are given nevida passed a law many years ago specifically allowing huntera to shoot v lid horses and to sell then hides for what they could get in the dpn market the law opened th way to a new and ansual industry and many men found the killing of wild horses very profitable besides the work was exciting and gave the bus the added zest of sport As time went on and the bus mess of killing these outlaws as the wild horses were often termed on the ranges assumed greater and greater proportions stockmen found that the professional hunters were in many cases abusing their rights and were kill ng bearded shod horses this put an end to the business for on corn plaint of the rn the nevada legislature promptly repealed the law it is estimated that 15 animals were killed during the time that the law was in force since the repeal of the law the wild horse question has grown to be as ser ious in the last few years as it was when ane nevada legislature was forced to enic the old law the united states forest service has not given orders for the killing of a single horse because it has no right to do so the forest officers of the nevada national forests how bad conditions ire and will do anything to ass st the stockmen to put down the nuisance on the ranges of many of the notional forests the supervisors have been at their wits end for several years trying to deviak a method to meet the difficulty i the wild horse problem is only one of the many which stockmen have to con tend with which the government is try ing in one way or ai other to solve on the ranges of the national forests pre batory animals such as wolves coyotes mountain 1 ons and wildcats do ands of dollars worth of damage to stock each year in all parts of the coun try on some langges forest officers have to contend with rustlers who sometimes succeed in stealing the great part of the stock which the predatory animals do not kill poisonous plants are mother nuisance which give the stockmen considerable trouble in many parts of the country sam has always shown a dis position to coperite with the stock mn in combating these nu in 1 fact he is doing better than merely meeting the stockmen half way in the work on many of the national forest ranges for the last year rangers and guards have been ass ened to the work of hunt ng and trapping with the sole aim of killing off the animals that diey upon stock tha work has met with marked success and hundreds of v olves and coyotes have to tt e bul lets and the poison of the hunters each animal killed means a decided saving to the sheep ludu stry for it is estimated that on wolf averaged ave about 1 damage ei n year |
